We are currently working on our new forum search system and need some help from the community.

We would like to get from you lot the questions you would like the search to give accurate answers back with to use for testing to make sure we have got the system correct.

Just fire them below and we will use them for testing.

Pete, can you also ask the question in PH board & mod forums, then use them to help with testing?

For me its not so much about the questions but the ability to restrict the search

So for instance, if I was buying a BMW E46 M3 and I wanted to know more about it, I would search BMW E46 M3 or just E46 M3

What I don't want is the return of 250 what car threads where it gets suggested, so if I could restrict my search to the BMW forums it would be a lot better rather than the masses of content from GG. I assume this would also assist you guys from a tech side as the search itself would be pulling a lot less data

I think the old search function allowed you to sort by forum?

Forum searches would be useful to specify by forum. It used to work by including f=num but is unreliable with google search. Most people would find it a faff to find the f numbers anyway so an option to include one or more specific forums would be dead handy like.

Logical operators:
  • Must include and NOT include would be nice, like google used to. e.g. +keyword or -keyword
  • AND and OR although I suppose AND could be covered by the + above

I never had a chance to experience the old search, it was always broken and then we moved to the pseudo Google search, if it did that's cool

There is a way of narrowing down google search to restrict it to certain forums, not that I can remember how frown

The ability to search by subforum would be by far the most useful facet.

Vanity search would probably be the most useful. Well, it's PH after all.

Being able to search for 'trashbat' and getting back per-post (not per-thread) results where people have quoted me would make finding replies much easier than at present.

That's the f= string but it's not always reliable. e.g. f=24 for website feedback

Choice of search in title only, title + body and body only
Choice of display thread or single post
Choice of search by user
Search for user
Choice of search by sub-forum
Choice of search by date (range)

Then have sort by date and sort by best match

One of the most annoying things in a search is when short words (less than 4 letters) aren't accepted - for instance SLK, MX5, E38.....

oh and making it selectable as far as forums to search with be wonderful

The old PH search was actually not half bad till it broke wink

It would be really handy to search by PH name but only when it is used in a post NOT when it comes up as a poster's name.
Not sure if that is possible?
