Huge list of manufacturers in the classifieds
Discussion
Agree, it would be easy enough to filter out only those manufacturers for which cars are actually listed.
IMO the PH classifieds section has gone rapidly down hill. Now it doesn't really work very well on a PC/laptop, tablet or smart phone. Shame as I now find myself using Autotrader more and more when browsing as it works so much better.

We currently have around 160 different manufacturers with listings underneath them, and as we cater for cars from the 19th century right through to modern stuff we have to be able to surface all these cars in the search.
I appreciate that not all people coming to the classifieds are looking for a Talbot or a Studebaker, but we have some of them for sale and thus some may want one.
We also allow you to save searches and be notified if the car suddenly gets advertised, so in rare categories allowing users to select these options and save a search is useful.
Appreciate that the majority of the audience aren't classic car nuts, so we will continue to monitor the usage.

That's not what I'm saying.
Let's say that you have, for sale right now:
Audi - 127
BMW - 94
Talbot - 1
Mercury - 1
Messerschmitt - 0
Metropolitan - 0
Then yes, I agree that you want to appeal to classic car types as well but you don't need to display Messerschmitt and Metropolitan in the list when there aren't any. By all means display Mercury and Talbot.
And, of course, you want to display Messerschmitt and Metropolitan when somebody is trying to sell their KR200. I understand the need for a full list.

I do understand what you are saying...
What I am saying is we designed it so that you could search for 0 cars and save that search to get notified
"We also allow you to save searches and be notified if the car suddenly gets advertised, so in rare categories allowing users to select these options and save a search is useful."
We will constantly review this though as the number of manufacturers is bigger than when we envisioned this.

It's still not designed around the user experience. Just because a tiny demographic might want to do theism it makes for a poor experience for the majority. What I am saying is we designed it so that you could search for 0 cars and save that search to get notified

Why not have the top 20 manufacturers by volume listed first (you know this stat on a yearly rolling basis), a separator, and then the rest in alphabetical order?

I do agree with you both that the list is now far too long and we need to look into it.Why not have the top 20 manufacturers by volume listed first (you know this stat on a yearly rolling basis), a separator, and then the rest in alphabetical order?

Yep this. It's just isn't enjoyable to browse anymore & hope it can be improved. Why not have the top 20 manufacturers by volume listed first (you know this stat on a yearly rolling basis), a separator, and then the rest in alphabetical order?
