PH chaps, I know there have been numerous threads on this, but just to ad my own 2p, I am now at a point where I'm finding the advertising is putting me off browsing on PH at all. The ads that auto-resize and cause what I'm reading to move are infuriating, and personally, I'm not encouraged to use the advertised product as it's electronically akin to someone coming up and tugging my arm to get my attention.

I know I can install ad blockers, but only a small percentage will do this, so the experience I'm having will be what the majority get too, including casual users who presumably you're trying to convert into long-term regular users, not drive away.

I'm a fan on PH and want it to survive and be viable, but as my source for car news, I'm looking elsewhere currently.

I think this screenshot probably sums my experience up. I click to PH, decide I quite fancy the Hillclimb article over lunch and hey presto! My mouse pointer is now somewhere close to the word "rule" hovering where the article was...

This all happens in the first five seconds of navigating to the website. I have no choice, no control, it's forced on me and makes the PH content hard to access.

Cheers.

+1

I dont mind and understand why the advertising is there but its becoming just plain annoying the way it is deployed

Its a bit like when AT changed their website and everyone left for PH classifieds.

Think about it.

This getting really annoying. I am struggling to think of a site less usable and its reduced my visits.

And from a website design perspective to advertise someone else's website more prominently than your own is crazy!

Today is frankly MENTAL on the ads front with what used to be considered a big ad at the top for Best of the best, shortly follow by a MAAAAAAAAASSIVE ad with Harvey Kietel`s face and flanked both sides by a Sony ad, kind of had enough now, won`t make the slightest difference what I think but it`s winding me up to the point of no return, and if you are using an iPad it`s even worse because where you thought you had touched actually just became something else in a split second!

I`m convinced that this is a Ken Livingstone style wind up where he sped up the traffic light phasing to create huge tailbacks before introducing the congestion charge where he then released the traffic after the introduction in order to make it look like a success, PH`s version is to wind us up to the point where we beg to pay not to have ads!

You all need to install ad blockers on your browsers, quit waiting for them to fix it. Clean and peaceful smile

There's a new Sky ad which causes the ipad to run like a dog when browsing forums....it takes the whole page about 1 minute to load, so now the forums are st as well as the classifieds.

Stopped used the classifieds as of last week because of all the stupid adverts and my will now be going on AT and not on here when I advertise next week,..... Will be cutting down on my forum time as well.....

Sad sad times, been on here for years and alas I think it's time to start using alternatives to this unusable site. Where did it all go wrong?

I've noticed that the post in a thread next to the advert halfway down gets nuked by the adblocker though. Small price to pay to get away from the intrusive (and of-no-interest) ads however.

The latest load of ads have been the last straw for me. That stupid bloody npower ad that expands across the screen if you so much as look at it - npower will never see a penny of my hard earned cash (though that's another story) so it's wasted on me. Then there's the stupid one on the homepage that expands downward and pushes all the content down with it, so you end up clicking on the damned ad instead of the thing you meant to click on. I've always held off installing ad-blocking browser plug-ins as I appreciate that advertising provides a valuable source of revenue for sites like this, but the current lot of ads are so intrusive that they've pushed me over the edge. Adblock now installed.

I agree with the OP, those adverts are ridiculously annoying.

Speaking of adverts, the PH classifieds are a mess and impossible to navigate on an iPad.

There's more advertising on this page than content! Do you have someone at PH Towers controlling this or have you handed it over to an agency?

Can i suggest that a home page take over and the banner not be run at the same time?

Surely they realise that things like this just encourage people to use adblockers (In which case PH gets no revenue) or just leave the site all together? I use an adblocker and I have a few websites white listed which allows them to show adverts. Sites which use an appropriate amount of advertising. ie not that horrendous example above, or autoplay videos get added to the white list. Obviously PH is not on the white list.

Are they actually going to listen to their users or are they just going to go the way of bebo/drudge report/myspace etc?

Exactly. If the site uses static banner ads you can click on the ones you're interested in and ignore the ones you aren't. Everyone's happy because the advertisers that are likely to get a visit will get it and PH will get its revenue. Start using intrusive advertising and people install ad-blockers. Users forfeit the opportunity to see ads they might actually like so they can get rid of the annoying ones. Credible advertisers get less site visits and PH gets less revenue.

No doubt some goatee-bearded, thick-rimmed-glasses-wearing pillock in an ad-agency who's referred to as a 'rock star' by his creative director thinks he's the dog's bks because he thought of waving his clients' wkfests in everyone's faces. No, tosspot. You're a narcissist and I just erased your navel-gazing balderdash from my browser!

I'd be interested to see the stats showing how many web users actually employ ad blockers, I'd wager it's less than 1%.

Ads like these are run to get 10's of millions of impressions, it won't just be running on PH. So they won't notice that a few gen'd up people are opting out of advertising via blockers.

The problem is the PH have given over too much of the home page to ad space.

Look at Autosport, they've almost constantly got a home page take over ad running, but it doesn't affect the content.

The mechanism of the new auto-expanding top ad is a sneaky way of attaining ad clicks and thus money by causes users to accidentally click on the advert as it replaces the content they were previously focused on.

I'm not sure advertisers paying for clicks would be too impressed by this as I would imagine a large percentage of the clicks they pay for are accidental and the client almost instantly closes the window.

Google doesn't allow this kind of ad display when using adsense...

Samsung Galaxy Note advert is a joke, trying to update my Stock in my account on the classifieds and i can barely see what i'm doing because the advert is taking over the whole screen see picture, its almost unusable and i pay for this service.

Sort it out now, there are better ways to fund the site than stick adverts all over it

Hi Peter,

Adverts should not appear in that section of the website so I apologise but thanks for pointing it out. I have spoken with the relevant people and they have removed the ads. Please do let me know if it happens again thumbup

Lee here, thanks for the feedback. Here is a further update on online display ads:

A. Large Ad Formats

The online advertising industry has trended to larger formats. We have been trialling new ad formats from agencies and the team have been working hard on the targeting and frequency of these ads. Results have been good for advertisers, with PH often a best performer for a campaign. However from the feedback we are making the following changes:

1. The push down ad which takes over half the screen, will not be continuing bar the exceptional case from a car manufacturer advertiser.

2. We are implementing this week an improved solution to ensure two large format ads do not appear on the same page.

B. Ad Quality

I think it is worth highlighting that the number of automotive advertisers has doubled since last year, so you should be seeing more motoring related ads from manufacturers, dealers, car finance, insurance and automotive services. Demand from automotive advertisers is rising, which with improved targeting, should deliver even more auto relevant and interesting advertising content to you. We are very much focused that targeted automotive advertising reflects the vast majority of the display advertising on PistonHeads.

C. Classifieds
In regard to the classified comments. The classified section continues to grow in audience and stock. The volume of car stock listed, the tracked leads generated and the number of dealers advertising have all risen over 50% on this time last year. This is good news for buyers and sellers alike.

There will be a new test beta for feedback in the New Year of further improvements covering how cars are displayed, searched and browsed.
