Viewing pictures in news articles

Is there any reason the system is so bad for viewing pictures?

Surely there could be some sort of viewer allowing users to switch between pictures as they're open, instead of each one opening in a new tab individually as an image. It's hardly slick and professional is it?

The news CMS is one of the oldest parts of the site.... I think it dates to around the start of the Internet, so it doesn't help with making the images appear better - but saying that, it is something we would like to do (and was descoped from the first release of the new look News sections). We will continue to improve on it over time and this will be something that will be fixed.
