You could then ensure that it gets tested on all types of machine with all types of software driven by a cross-section of skill levels!

This change was fundamental to our underlying data structure so was slightly different to a change where we can beta it to a select few, as we do have a beta test forum for this sort of thing. We welcome anyone new who wants to join it - just PM me.

Though saying that, we have been working on having a better testing environment approach for users that we will roll out shortly - it just wasn't ready for the commercial pressures of this release.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you are testing these updates behind the sences before release then I think you need to look at your testing processes, because they plainly do not reflect the real world.

Like most of the IT professionals responding will know, that most of the challenges with these types of things are not technical but business pressures and costs - if we had all the time and resource in the world these things would never happen... so I keep the offer open so you can understand what is actually behind the scenes.

Pete, you have my sympathies. Been there, many times. I have to say it seems particularly unwise for a system like this one to have commercial pressures override user experience. If there is some positivity to be found, perhaps our collective grumbling can form a stick you can use to beat whoever pushed this into going live before it was ready.

There are always commercial pressures for everything and thus a judgement call needs to be made... It's all a numbers game really.

The better testing environment would not have solved some of the issues with this launch, it is just a better way to run multiple environments with real world data exposed to a public audience - (the data etc already existed in a testing environment), which was the point I was referring to of being too late to use for this project. The challenge of technical improvements vs business and commercial product features is a battle that has always been fought.

Sorry, something's not quite right.

The technical team have been notified.

We are in final stages of testing the fix for this.

I know this isn't a solution, but as a workaround, just before you post if you go to My Stuff in a separate window and then post it will work till we get the fix out.

Again, even in the short term, using vBulletin or something similar would have been cheaper than building it in-house yourselves. It really does put me off using the site.

Another major problem you have is the fact that it doesn't record read topics per user, but per machine. So if I read articles at work, logging in at home still shows them as unread. No other forum I've used does this and it's incredibly annoying.

The forums was started and built before vBulletin, migrating 40 million posts is a big decision to make if moving forum software.

The last point I concede - the whole last read part of the system needs an overhaul and has not been touched in around 9 or so years.... before multi devices became popular.

It is a responsive skin, which means it responds to the size of the screen width. iPad in portrait gets mobile, in landscape desktop IIRC
