Tried to look at the thread but clicking on the last page number( 316) takes me to 'nothing to see here', back tracking along the thread the last page with actual content is 298. Have I broken the interweb?

I have no idea, but your explanation seems plausible.

It was not "modded to hell" I don't think that's the reason. It looks more like the size of the thread has outgrown itself. hence why we have VOL 2, Vol 3, etc, of threads, as they get beyond a certain size.
