I've been using adblock since the dawn of time anyway and once you have it anyway customising it for different sites is too much faff.

Adblock plus and Ublock here.

I don't mind ads, but I do when they are the "hover to expand" type and when there is any unexpected sound emanating from them.

Agreed, me neither.

The problem is more likely the browser is infected with malware, adware.

There is, but you have to have a verified email address.
I have a verified address. Which I now want to change.
There you go Funk - Not A bloody skim link
Cheers.

That seems like a very strange way to handle something very simple, given the site has hundreds of thousands of users.

Honestly, using Chrome on OS X with no ad blocker it's not that bad other than the odd time when they fk up and there's a massive ad that "overhangs" the top of the screen into the forum text.

My biggest annoyance is that I think I once searched for Bentley Continental's so now I have ads for Bentley Continental's at the bottom of every fking page.

Display advertising is a total waste of money I don't know why companies bother. Google Bob Hoffman and you'll read why.

Every now and then when I try PH on a new machine/device I remember just how bad it is without an adblocker. I don't know how people use the web without one.

I'm currently making a Pi-Hole for the house, so I won't need to run ad blocking software on each device: http://pi-hole.net/

The other hassle with the ads is that they take so long to load, the content shifts down midway through loading the page, so if you are trying to click on a link, it jumps down and you end up clicking on something else..

A trivial problem to solve in the web world, since the dialup days, but for some reason still affects pages on PH...

Jesus wept, I've been using ABP/Ghostery for years and I just disabled both and reloaded this thread

The ads were bad enough, but Ghostery was blocking 49, yes FORTY NINE, different tracking methods used to try and sell me stuff - more than I've seen on any other site I've checked...

Back on now, sorry PH but the ads are shockingly clunky and the tracking stuff is just scary

Then it seems 90% of us have this malware and it's very special malware that only happens on PH. It's more likely, if you only browse at work, that your company filters a lot of the adverts for you. Alteratively you both need a Specsavers advert quite badly.

I browse using android phone with chrome beta browser.

No intrusive or autoplay nonsense. Wish i could say the same for other sites.

Alternatively, I could be an expert with a computer science degree and 20 years of experience in internet software development who knows how to keep the multiple browsers on multiple computers at work and home free from malware.

The 81% poll result is a self selecting sample and I hear exactly the same things said by family & friends when they want me to 'fix' their computers and in most cases the primary problem is browser hijacking for the purposes of click fraud.

You can read more about it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browser_hijacking

The two most common complaints are search redirection and full page adverts and you can read about some of the other defining characteristics at https://www.malwarebytes.org/pup/

The PH forum Ads are incredibly unobtrusive. Except when they take frikkin ages to load on my phone and cause a page reload. I can generally deal with that though so no worries.
