Yes I know this should be in another sub forum but (avatars)
Discussion
As you will be able to tell from my stats
<-----
I've been on here a while.
I'm more of a lurker than a poster to be fair but, whilst I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, I find it very difficult to weigh peoples posts up.
An avatar by the side of your post is just that. Me, personified.
I use it on ever other forum as primary means to identify a personality in the first instance and secondly to influence the way that people perceive my posts.
I'm fairly dead pan here/ anywhere and I use smileys rarely as the systems are a bit clunky, but I use my usual standard avatar (i.e. not my profile pic) to express my perspective before I start and it's usually effective.
I don't understand why they're not enabled here. Did I miss an argument? Has it always been the way? Do frequent users prefer that level of anonymity?
It's very strange (relative to what I know)...

I expect, by the time I log in later this evening, that this thread will be in Website Feedback along with all the other threads that have asked the same question about Avatars, Signatures, etc, repeatedly over the last few years and all of which got the same response along the lines of no.

Which is why I posted here and not there.Edited by AlexRS2782 on Thursday 11th February 00:33
I don't wish to offer feedback.
Consider this as more of a general question.
i.e. How do avatars, or lack of, influence the way you perceive users?

If you want avatars, signatures and other clutter such as 'like' and 'rep' buttons then this site isn't for you and Facebook.com is what you need. Generally such clutter is requested by the younger generation for attention seeking purposes as anyone over a certain age does not care for such pointless crap.

I'm more of a lurker than a poster to be fair but, whilst I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, I find it very difficult to weigh (peoples' - needs the apostrophe because you are referring to the posts of people, as in plural and the genitive adjective) posts up.
An avatar (why use a double-space?) by the side of your post is just that. Me, personified.
(Why use a space?) I use it on ever(?) other forum as (a/the) primary means to identify a personality in the first instance and secondly to influence the way that people perceive my posts.
I'm fairly dead pan here/ anywhere and (why another double-space?) (And why another space?) I use smileys rarely as the systems are a bit clunky, but I use my usual standard avatar (i.e. not my profile pic) to express my perspective before I start and it's usually effective.

Well we may just like some grammatical ability as a starting point, but you appear lacking in that respect! <-----

BTW, what were you actually trying to comment about anyway?
The obvious solution would be to extend the facility to the users and provide an On/Off button with it. Then the people who enjoy using the image as a shortcut to identify the poster could do so and the Luddites/Moderators and Old Guard could turn it off.
A similar 'solution' to the swear filter has been proposed many times over many years: Let the users decide if they want to read bks or not.
It's as if the 'powers that be' spend all their time ensuring that PH makes them money with absolutely no regard for improving the users experience: I saw on another thread that PH now has 30 office staff - so I assume that OUR browsing of the site and use of the classifieds must bring in well over £1m/year just to pay for their salaries/pensions. If we all stop browsing PH, they're all out of a job...

I can understand what the OP is saying. I find that an avatar is how I end up identifying users. It's more a subconscious thing, though I do like it. It's like putting a face to a blank sheet. I know how they post, how frequently, their intelligence, etc. Plus you get an idea of the person through the picture, be it; anime, cars, horses, etc.
I do agree signitures do make clutter and it's best without. They end up a bragging space, with dick measurments.
