Lemme guess... It's a still from a zombie movie or a cartoon zombie?

Any predictions on the number of avatars we'd see that are blue and white propellers or three-pointed stars or blue ovals or...? And that, of course, assumes that there wouldn't be gif animations....

What avatar do you use?!
So, what is it? Embed the image in a post...

The obvious solution would be to extend the facility to the users and provide an On/Off button with it. Then the people who enjoy using the image as a shortcut to identify the poster could do so and the Luddites/Moderators and Old Guard could turn it off.

A similar 'solution' to the swear filter has been proposed many times over many years: Let the users decide if they want to read bks or not.

It's as if the 'powers that be' spend all their time ensuring that PH makes them money with absolutely no regard for improving the users experience: I saw on another thread that PH now has 30 office staff - so I assume that OUR browsing of the site and use of the classifieds must bring in well over £1m/year just to pay for their salaries/pensions. If we all stop browsing PH, they're all out of a job...
No, the obvious solution is what we have now - no excess of pictures or swearing, and a layout that doesn't look too much like an internet forum.

This allows PH to avoid blacklists, therefore ensuring that the forums and the classifieds can be browsed anywhere (eg even at the strictest place of work). Thus earning Haymarket £££ and also keeping the posters, fantasy garage browsers & purchasers happy biggrin

It is a question that keep appearing within the forums and one that frequently gets discussed here at PH Towers. For now the general consensus is (as this thread illustrates) that they aren't needed or wanted.

Which would show a lack of imagination and I'd be less inclined to waste my time reading their post...

As you will be able to tell from my stats

<-----

I've been on here a while. (ish)

I'm more of a lurker than a poster to be fair but, whilst I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, I find it very difficult to weigh (peoples' - needs the apostrophe because you are referring to the posts of people, as in plural and the genitive adjective) posts up.

An avatar (why use a double-space?) by the side of your post is just that. Me, personified.

(Why use a space?) I use it on ever(?) other forum as (a/the) primary means to identify a personality in the first instance and secondly to influence the way that people perceive my posts.

I'm fairly dead pan here/ anywhere and (why another double-space?) (And why another space?) I use smileys rarely as the systems are a bit clunky, but I use my usual standard avatar (i.e. not my profile pic) to express my perspective before I start and it's usually effective.

I don't understand why they're not enabled here. (And why another space?) Did I miss an argument? Has it always been the (this?) way? Do frequent users prefer that level of anonymity?

It's very strange (relative to what I know)...
Well we may just like some grammatical ability as a starting point, but you appear lacking in that respect!

BTW, what were you actually trying to comment about anyway?
Have you seriously got nothing better to do at 4:45am?

Those who have expressed that opinion appear to be prolific posters and would therefore place less reliance on an avatar to determine the type of person who's posted a comment.

Mr. Tidy is a prime example. He needs one of these... nerd

That way I'd (probably) be less inclined to respond to his pedantry.

Nah, I chose my user name because I was listening to the Cranberries at the time.

I'd post it up but it's hosted on my photobucket account and I'm in work where access is restricted to file sharing sites.

Nowt wrong with the gif images IMO, some can be amusing but I see your point when it comes to the unnecessary NSFW stuff.

There's another reason right there. How do you imagine your IT people are going to react when they suddenly see hundreds of blocked requests to photobucket images all coming from your PC because you spent 30 mins reading PH at lunchtime?

The day PH gets sigs/avatars will be the day that I never read another thread here. I can't stand them, some are so big on other forums that they take up 80% of the screen space. Horrible things.

PH has enough trouble delivering content, never mind sodding avatars smash
