So how many complaints does it take to get a thread shut down? Is there a certain number? Is there a minimum number of unique users that all have to complain before action is taken or can a few complaints prompt this sort of reaction? What decides a thread should be locked rather than just deleting the alleged 'offensive' posts?

Just wondering

I think this was discussed before, and iirc the general feeling was not to have a specific number as knowledge of this number could mean a socially engineered shutdown as opposed to one done on merit by a mod with proper brain cells.

Tbh modding is a thankless task and whilst we can all see decisions we don't agree with, on balance the mods do a pretty good balancing job imo.

Hi all,

The simple answer is that we'll close threads when we deem it necessary. As Jeremy says, this might even happen if there haven't been any reports (and in fact does when mods catch offensive threads early and they are deleted before anyone sees them)

The rules of posting are free for all to see, and everyone agreed to them when they signed up. If we decide that rules are being broken we'll act on it, simple as that.

Sometimes things will slip through the net, but as has already been pointed out the mods do a fantastic job of a thankless task. In my opinion it is the duty of anyone posting to ensure that they comply with the rules, and when they're unsure they should always err on the side of caution. If they don't the outcome will be removal of posts, thread closures and bans (in no particular order).

I'd also like to remind people that we have no ulterior motive and we are only ever doing what we feel we need to do in order to enforce our rules and do what is best for PistonHeads.
