IMO the first row of news articles should start above the fold, otherwise like it.
PH's armchair experts on web design would do well to remember that few successful sites are designed based on random 'i don't like this because it isn't what i like' feedback, and that what PH users actually do on PH, as indicated by the analytics across multiple design iterations, should be the main arbiter of design changes.
Seems like they are stuck in a permanent transitional phase between the old amateur PH and a new modern 'commercial' PH, without the resources to give the whole site the once-over it needs.

I'm not an expert myself but I've sat through enough looooooong meetings with the digital team at my workplace telling me they can't do something 'because analytics' to know that they would rip that frontpage to pieces.I'd be amazed if PH are doing anything that advanced anyway, given that they've not got a handle on displaying photos at a viewable resolution on mobile for nearly 2 years now.
