Ban me from the McCann thread specifically if that annoys you... (Anyone that's listening)

If these sort of things kick off, can the posters involved just be banned from the thread. Instantly? There are some things on here I would genuinely like to read about (Trump, cyclists, etc) but it's just not worth wading through the dross to find the relevant posts.
Having opened the another cycling death in London thread I know what you mean frown

Amongst the dross there may well be useful snippets which come out that could be useful
eg are ASLs encouraging inexperienced cyclists to squeeze up alongside trucks and buses
But otherwise there will be some posters continually arguing that oranges are erm orange why would you disagree
and others that Tripe is tripe can't you see that?
While both might be right they somehow seem to think the other is somehow disagreeing with them

I have no idea how it can be moderated to resolve it, so just pop in from time to time to see how it's going

And I knock posts into the ground!

But seriously... I think you'll find that, if enough people click 'report' to complain about a particular poster's attitude, the mods will take appropriate action! And don't worry, only the mods will know who has complained! (That may be an assumption on my part!)

I thought you were a specialist taxi company that only took fares from Polish people.

All I can offer is that if you were banned from the entirety of NP&E, I really cannot imagine just how badly you must have fked up. yikes

AFAIK It doesnt work like that
a) it depends who's mod

b) it depends who's on the other side
You might be right ( and arent we all right smile ) but if there are a bunch of people who think the opposite and there's more of them or theyre powerfully built

you know the rest

Still never mind - isnt it pretty much the same in real life too?

"Cockwomble" got banned from the whole site - I liked his posting style* but I respect the fact that others might not have done and I understand that he was given fair warnings

* he was a bit like Techiedave on all the recreational drugs you could take at the same time!!!

I was going to post about this too. The real problem area (IMO) is the posts which go like this:

I've got a good idea!

Let's make everyone a mod for a week, any one can delete a post.

Let us see how far we get.

Who's to decide what's "dross"?

Far too often on here, simply disagreeing with someone gets you branded a "troll". There are too many people who cannot handle others disagreeing with them, and they don't see it as unreasonable to try and have those people banned.
Have a look at the two thread examples I mentioned in the rest of my post; look for the multi-nested quote threads and it's really very easy to see where it is and who it's coming from. The "you're an idiot/no, you're an idiot" approach crops up daily.

Get rid of the nested quote option. Those of a contentually bankrupt disposition will be forced to either work harder for their obnoxiousness or go somewhere else.

Add a 'block user' button? That was there is no need to scroll past the offending waffle?

I appreciated the smile that went with your post but seriously that's not a great idea - just makes the forum "echo chambers" for those that can't stand an alternative view that they don't agree with - hardly makes for good discussion

I think we should be able to up and down vote posts and even posters.

People post deliberately provocative stuff because they think they're around like minded people or even around a silent majority that agrees with them.

I don't want to see people banned but at least up and down voting shows if you're around linkeminded people and might reduce confrontations.

It seems to work on other forums like Reddit and keep a more pleasant atmosphere.

The echo chamber effect is here anyway. You don't need an ignore button for that.

But they generally aren't much use because soon as an ignored post is quoted it becomes visible again.

The posters who contribute nothing and just play the "dick" card rely on people responding to them, so it's probably best to treat them like difficult 4 year olds and genuinely ignore them.

Depends how it is used. I personally wouldn't use it on people who hold different views, it's more to do with how they interact, the rudeness and the wafflestream they post. I ask questions and interact with many on here, an infinitesimally tiny proportion have been rude directly, and sometimes, the waffle post content in the Trump thread gets beyond the pale, and informative posts are missed.
