Clearly this doesn't apply to everyone, but many users seem to post during 9-5, Monday to Friday, i.e work hours. Especially the people who post frequently. So really, they aren't consuming much, if any, of their own time/private time/family time.

Probably less than 5% of my posts are evenings or weekends. Occasionally I will post outside office hours while I'm sat waiting for something, such as waiting for my wife to finish browsing in a shop hehe

I fully appreciate what you are saying about 'wasting' so much time on a forum, but I suppose if people enjoy it, then why not?

Speaking personally, I've learned loads from PH. Lots of really useful stuff to do with business, personal finance, investments, careers and tax advice, property stuff, and so on. PH has solved a few problems for me and genuinely helped me in many areas, so I am quite happy to have spent 1-2 hours a week having a read or posting something (during office hours...)

What is a high post count anyway?

eg I surf PH in the morning / evening from a non-UK timezone, and average 2-3 posts a day.

That is about 1000 / year - is that a lot?

I don't think it's a lot. I post around 1000 per year as well, and I don't feel that I spend that much time on PH. I just go on every so often each day Monday to Friday, while working at my desk.

My post was in reply to Jim H, who was trying to suggest that anyone who posts a lot on a forum may 'look back on their life' and regret it in some way, which I found very odd indeed, and a bit of a thinly veiled dig at people with higher post counts.

Do people look back and regret how much time they spent watching TV? Watching films? Reading books? In the pub? Cutting the grass? Doing DIY? Commuting? Being at work?

Where do people like Jim draw the line on what is an 'acceptable' use of time?

Shame. I rarely post in N&P, but there are certain threads I follow and would like to contribute to. Sadly a can’t despite having been a member for years, which seems a bit rubbish to be honest. Those of us who are long term members who post only occasionally are less valued as members than those who post numerous times.

All this will do is increase the number of garbage posts as people strive to pass the 1000 mark.

I just wanted to see, i haven't done 60 posts in last few days for nothing lol

I actually prefer rest of PH anyway, more friendly.

I've said earlier at the date of implementation I think it was just post count regardless of where it has been previously made.... in conjunction with time served.
I've posted the same assumption. But maybe this is evidence that we are both incorrect here, and they *are* subtracting NP&E posts?

Either way, it could do with clarification.
I think this provides it

Looks like i can post now, not that i am fussed.
For any new member who can't post in NP&E all posts will have to be made outside it ergo 1000 post requirement for entry (Oh and 12 mths membership)

For any existing member 12 mths and a total of 1000 post irrespective of where those posts have been made would and does seem like logical implementation (To isolate from that total any posts made in NP&E would probably require some very sophisticated programming and I don't think it would be worth the extra effort)

That sounds a bit desperate to me.
What was the gem of a post that you just had to post on NP&E ?

I agree. This sounds the most logical. yes

As I said previously, I would be surprised if PH had done anything more sophisticated than going on the already-calculated total post count (displayed in your profile and also, optionally, for every poster beside their name). Anything more complex would be additional coding effort and additional server load.

I'm not ruling it out, mind, but Occam's Razor (and also prior experience) say not.

A forum stands or falls by its content. If nobody posts, then it withers and dies. So, yes, people who seldom post *are* less valued as members, because you just take without giving back. And if you leave, then how does that impact the site other than a few less hits on some webstats?

Sorry to be harsh, and no offence intended.

This is why i steer clear on NPW, posters like yourself. I have nothing to post, but if i do I will. Maybe don't jump to the wrong conclusions automatically, not everyone thinks like you.

You claim to have made 60 posts in a couple of days just so you can post on NP&E.

I asked what your subsequent NP&E post was.

What wrong conclusion am I supposed to have jumped to?

Come back to the dogs thread, Bobberoo!!

There’s a couple of very angry people in here, one of which could have an argument in a locked room.

Getting a dog = news.
Choosing a breed = politics?
Cost of dogfood = economics.

I had 24,114 posts

I made this post - deleted it and then posted it again so now I am at 24,116 posts

The post that I deleted - how does the software detect where it was made wink

I think we agree biggrin

At my usual posting rate it will be over 60 years before I can post in NP&E, even though I've been a member for over 12 years. As I have two chronic medical conditionos I will never live that long

As you’re only making 1.3 posts per month, do you really care?
