I'm not saying someone should, but someone could sign that email up to a lot of spam services, and perhaps text message spam too.

"Alan" has been texting me for a day and a half, again asking all the right questions. I googled the car check he wanted as soon as the mail came in and it brought me here. I didn't even click on the link because my nephew had been sent a similar one a few weeks ago.

They must get your card/bank details at the same time, seems a lot of effort for £15 otherwise.

Edit: Just for the information of anyone else finding their way here - it's super weird to ask for a car report from the seller, the onus is on the buyer for that anyway! Anyone feel that selling a car privately has got a lot harder recently?

Funnily enough I've just noticed this thread.

'Alan' has been in contact with me as well regarding a car I have for sale on PH.

Same details as above, he insists on using autochecks.co.uk

I've not heard of it, so I assumed it was dubious, he told me HPI checks are not good enough as they don't have the latest data.

He's clearly a scammer, don't be fooled by whoever it is.

If you've paid, they will have your card details, it's a classic phishing scam, so make sure you cancel your card and get a new one.

Thank you for the continued reports here. We have reported this to action fraud again and are looking at implementing further warnings for sellers to prevent falling victim to scams/phishing attempts.

As recommended above if anyone has completed one of these checks, then alert your bank and cancel your bank card immediately. If any genuine buyer wants to carry out a car check, they should do this at their own cost and the onus isn't on the seller.

Same, but I called him out. I am a car dealer and refused to do the check as I already had one. As soon as I asked if it was a scam, he didn't reply. be cautious all.

The English on the website is hilarious..... its written by a 9 year old

https://autochecks.co.uk/

Reported to many places to have it struck off. Do a WHOIS search and the sites only been live since october.

Ahh crap. Alan has got me, same number and email, same autochecks.co.uk website. Annoyed with myself, but was distracted with sorting the kids out for a party. Similar to others, a day or so of genuine interest, asking the right questions, then radio silence. Card cancelled now. At least I did get the report though

This is the first of 4 pages, has the MOT history on it too. All info seems correct.

Interestingly Alan has responded to me this afternoon saying he’s sorry for the radio silence and no show yesterday, he’s been out of town because of a family bereavement. Part of me is thinking I should keep this going and see where it actually leads, see what his next move is.

I’ve got Alan in contact now! Every time he messages, I tell him I’ve bought another hpi check with a different website.

I've just had "Alan" contact me also - sent him an HPI cert for the car and apparently he's been "scammed" before off the back of an HPI.

"Poor Alan" I thought, but then told him to go away - politely!!!

Same process for me - Alan again, same number, even the exact same questions.

This time the site was advancedhpi.co.uk - it looked dubious so I actually started a thread about it - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

When I sent him the TrustPilot reports for the site and said I wouldn't be putting any details in, he went silent.

I told him that If he wants an AHP report he should go to Helen Waite.
