When I used to have an online forum back in the day I just prevented posts from IPs based in the likes of China and Russia. Had a blacklist of about eight countries and it made a huge difference to the amount of spam posted. Most forum software seemed to support this even then and we're talking early noughties.

Still got people whining about the free forum I made for them, mind.
