Guide on how to post a picture

Trying to understand the preceding tech stuff but struggling. Apologies if this goes wrong, but I am technically a numpty. It is official.
Here goes anyway.

Tried the above but it only shows once I click the link. Havent understood what I have done wrong. Help requested. Thanks, G.
Thanks Stefan, now I comprehend the little square bracket thingys to start and finish the activity.

....??? OK so it seems I need to type the [pic] stuff for a pic to appear, but from what I've just worked out, not on a link....THIS site seems to include the [url]/[/url] business, and a link appears as just a link if I ONLY type the full http address of a link without the [url] stuff.....er, right. BUT links freakout if you edit a post...hmmmm
