I have been using pistonheads for years, before it was bought out and when there was only a tiny number of users, I was probably one of the ones who helped spread the word as I used to always tell my mates about it. recently in the last year the site is appaling, firstly it is so damn slow and is constantly crashing. BUT THE MOST ANNOYING THING IS THIS: Every now and again when I try and place or update an existing advert I get the standard screen saying advert will be live shortly BUT it never does and if i've updated an existing advert it also gets deleted from the account. I have sent various emails and never had reply I even rang PH number a few months back and the person on other end told me that shouldnt be happening and assured me if i tried it again it should work, so i did this and still it didnt work. ITs becoming a real pain in the a@#% website so much so that i dont even bother looking at it anymore, infact ive found several alternative sites and forums that are alot better. If PH are not careful they are going to get overtaken by new sites popping up as people are forced to look elsewhere, just a small example I found a fairly new site(not very good i must admit, but atleast it didnt constantly crash) www.TorqueTEC.co.uk
I work in the software industry and I could probably teach the developers of PH a thing or two, firstly your site is written in ancient asp try rewriting it in asp.net, if you need a developer you can hire me full time for 50k a yearwinkwinkwink
PH YOU REALLY NEED TO SORT THIS DIFFICULT SITE OUT FROM TALKING TO FRIENDS THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND CONTACT PH TO NO AVAIL !!

Regards

If you'd like to mail me with details of your problems with adverts then I'll investigate for you and reply here.

As for teaching me a thing or two, I'm always happy to learn.

As for ASP.net, it's something that will get adopted in due course, but right now I think we're better off fixing the problems we have (which are DB related, not front end) than recoding.

Hello

My first post on PH, and its a shame its a complaint. I have been using the site for years, and I agree with the comments here. It is going down hill!!! I always have problems putting up an advert in the classifieds section.

I work in IT as well as SQL Developer (plus .NET). Any help needed let me know. I can do a good price.

I have started using www.torquetec.co.uk recently. And sold a few items on there, just sold my ancient Sony CD changer on there it this weekend.

Well, welcome to every who uses www.torquetec.co.uk . spin

The classifieds submission process is being rebuilt currently. We're aware it needs attention and so it's getting some.

Well I've just had a peek at the site mentioned above, and it's not surprising it's quick - there's bugger all there!
Methinks someone's just looking for some cheap and cheeky advertising. rolleyes

ETA
In fact - links from a very popular site like PH will do them the world of good won't it?

torquetec is written is asp.net, increased performance as well as tonnes of other benefits like programmble with c# google asp.net vs asp its the must have asp is well outdated. plus im guessing pistonheads is not using stored procedures in there database and this could seriously slow down performance there are lots of things to consider when designing website. PH is well overdue for a total update

in my professional opinion as a software developer i would say both site PH and torqutec are pretty sh#$ in the way they are coded thats no disrespect to PH. I can recode yours for you put it all into asp.net and sql server(dont know what db your using at mo) any developer will tell you both sites are poorly coded. nerd

Thanks. I'm just an amateur coder who knocked this up in my bedroom so it's good to get tips from a pro.

I'm not sure you know, it's not like anyone is actually going to want this hunk o'junk, i mean come on, Google loads faster than this end they have a backup OF THE WHOLE INTERNET to load up, perhaps it should be done in C#?

Sounds a bit complicated. I like ASP because its like basic which I learned on a ZX81, BBC Micro etc. I googled Ajax but all this talk of asynchronous stuff left me totally befuddled. I've only just got my head around access databases. They're brilliant - so much better than those text files I used until last year.
