On other fora I frequent, each post within a thread is given its own number and navigable link - I can therefore jump someone straight to the post I want to draw their attention to. I can't find a facility for this on PH, but I believe it would be very useful. Any chance of it happening at some stage?

Not quite. That's linking to a specific thread; I'm talking about down to post-level. Here's an example on the STOC:

If I click on the '#7' it produces a URL:

Clicking or pasting that URL then automatically takes you to that post:

It's very useful when you want to highlight a specific post - I guess there's already similar functionality in the PH code for reporting an individual post that could be adapted?

It's a good idea which has been mentioned before, but I'll bump it up the list to try and get it done a little bit sooner!

In the meantime you can do it by hand... count the number of posts before the one you're trying to link to, add 20 for every preceding page, and stick that number in the URL as an "i" parameter.

So this links to this post:

Clever, but when I did it, it removed the rest of the thread...?

It doesn't remove it, it just starts the display of the thread from that post. If you try that link again now you'll see it shows that post followed by yours and mine.

If you want to display the page starting from post number 20n [n=0,1,2...] in the usual way but have it jump part way down the page to the post in question... well that's possible too smile probably simpler in fact...

Go to the page, count the number of posts (starting from 1) to the post you want to jump to, then stick #messagen where n is the post number on the end of the URL.

Here's an example with this thread, again jumping to my first post:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

...note that it's #message5 as opposed to id=4 because you count from 1 instead of from 0. Also you don't add 20 for each page of a multi-page thread in this case... here's an example jumping to the 13th post on the second page of a thread:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

...That's kinda weird, the first example seems to want to jump to the bottom of the page instead... But if you click in the address bar and hit return it jumps to the right place.

Weird.

Er well it works when you jump to a different thread, and that's probably good enough smile

Really sorry to bump this, I know it's not ideal - but - how's this coming along?

Interestingly quite well - as part of the Forum Search work, we are doing this as a needed feature. Release schedule is for October 15th
