The LP400S Countach was the original lean mean killing machine, devoid of all hi-tech safety gadgets and the associated flab of modern day super-cars, and it went like stink, and it's roadholding was pretty sensational due to its width, low weight, low height, excellent wheel-base and those stunningly wide Pirelli P7 tyres which didn't make it too twitchy compared to the likes of the Lancia Stratos and Porsche 911 which were regularly flying off the road backwards.

The LP400S was replaced by the more powerful and bigger bodied LP500S in order to accommodate the, shall we say, more generously proportioned and richer client base living in the USA that the car was aimed at.

I nearly purchased an LP400S back in the 1990s and have been kicking myself ever since for not going for it - and wait for it, the owner was asking £35,000 which was later re-advertised by a dealer a few weeks later for £30,000 - begs the question as to how much did he pay for it?

Of course what you meant to say is that the bigger bodies were introduced on the LP400S3 models ;-)

It's amazing isn't it to think of how little these cars were worth twenty years ago, how times have changed. But then could this be a bubble and they will drop again?

In other news, really sorry for Footsoldier and his car. I hope he gets to sort it all out quickly and swiftly.

I guess with cars like that you either wrap the up in cotton wool and hide them away as museum pieces or get them out and enjoy them as they were intended (and enable others to enjoy seeing them and take photos as they walk by!). Sadly with the latter you are at the mercy of every other road user, not all of whom are as passionate or careful as they ought to be.

Just got back to the airport and saw the damage. Looks like it's just the front bumper that's been torn off and nothing damaged underneath.

Pain in the ****, but I don't remember growing up wanting to get a Countach so I could leave it in my garage...will be back on the road asap.

I've just looked at your profile and realise you are the owner of nearly all the desirable cars I see on my way to work....well apart from the toy dog super car owner.

I especially like the Evo and Cosworth.

My car is now with Valentino who is undertaking the recommissioning service (you might recall it only has 2,800 miles on the clock inc 500 over the last 14 years). The car was inspected pre purchase by Valentino who declared it exceptional, and naturally he and his guys are the best people to undertake the work.

Here is the engine and box out, so that all seals and pipework etc can be replaced (I don't trust 31 year old items). Looks massive!

Thanks - although I'm sure there must be others! at the risk of going o/t, here are the two you mention, together...




The Subaru is much better than reviews at launch would suggest. I think the reviewers must have forgotten to press the sport button, which does more to change the character of the car than in anything else I've driven.

The pink lamborghini belonged to a friend of mine. He bought it direct from the factory and imported the car before there were dealers in the country. The story goes that he picked the car and his wife picked the colour. He owned the car from new until he replaced it with a yellow diablo.

The pink lamborghini belonged to a friend of mine. He bought it direct from the factory and imported the car before there were dealers in the country. The story goes that he picked the car and his wife picked the colour. He owned the car from new until he replaced it with a yellow diablo.
On that particular day I was quite lucky to take the photos because I was running low on rolls of 35mm film. I never managed to have a chat with the owner at the meeting which was a shame. I gather he was a dentist living near Halifax, though can't for the life of me remember his name as I type this reply.

There have been various rumours floating around for many years as to the reason for the bright pink colour scheme of this Countach, including the dress colour and the belt colour of his wife/girlfriend, and I have no idea which version is correct without speaking first-hand to the owner. I had no idea he had traded his Countach in for a Diablo - what was he thinking?

I've since learned that he sold the Countach to Wheelhouse in Nottingham who couldn't sell it for love nor money till they had it resprayed. If I had know the Countach had been for sale I would have bought the car off him for probably far more money that he sold it to them for.

Your comment about there being no dealers in the UK isn't entirely correct because Portman were importing Lamborghini cars from their small showroom in London in the 1980s and have the adverts to prove it.

In the early 1980s I actually push-biked all the way from Nottingham to Syston in Leicestershire via the A46 which took me well over 3 hours to achieve, in order to view a brand new silver Countach LP400 S which was on show in the Cooper Cars showroom. Unfortunately for me, the sales team were most uninterested with my enthusiasm and hid away in their offices, and to add insult to injury, the receptionist bit my head off for me merely thinking about opening the doors - which in hindsight was probably a very big mistake to make considering that one of their higher spending business customers had called round to see my father and had suggested to me that I visit the showroom in the first place - luckily for me one of the customers in the showroom overheard her snotty comments, walked over and asked me if I wanted to look inside, and opened the door so that I could take a few photographs. The receptionist was well and truly put in her place. I have no idea who this customer was to this day. but must say thank you to him.

I've not seen a Countach in the flesh for many years now, so they still have that certain rarity appeal that many modern-day mass produced over-priced and heavily over sanitised supercars just don't have.

And as a footnote and am ever hopeful, if there are any Countach owners in the Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire areas I would really appreciate the opportunity to take a few photographs, perhaps in the summer months. The classic car meet at the Griffins Head pub in Papplewick in Nottingham in the spring and summer months is very popular, with a stunningly wide selection of cars and bikes turning up, from mundane runarounds like the Mini, Maxi, to Audis, Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis and sometimes more exotic stuff to drool over. Just make sure you arrive early for a parking space!

I'm pretty sure Jeff White was the owner of the pink Countach, and I have photos of it certainly it in pink at Wheelhouse in Nottingham along with the Honda NSX (I think) and the yellow Diablo that they were traded for, which became LAM207. Jeff's girlfriend's belt and leather jacket apparently accounted for the pink exterior and blue interior on the car, but I have no idea which item of clothing was in which colour.
