Will depreciate almost as fast as the car, but great plate for now.

Those reserves are hilarious!

I bought my plate there. Decent way to spend a morning.

What a dangerous site Pistonheads is... I had a quick look in Supercars as usual and saw this discussion, having never heard of the DVLA Auction site I popped over and ended up buying a registration...

Thanks for the heads up I think...

If I change my name to OGJ 570E I can have a personal plate for next to nothing.

The DVLA have got loads of unregistered 2 number, 2 letter plates. You can email them a combination and, if it's available, they'll put it into auction and let you know. I requested the year of my birth followed by my initials - since my surname begins with a "V" I was the only bidder and got it for the reserve.

I was born in 69. Not sure I'll go for that combination.

After doing a search, I saw a Reg I was interested in, advertised for sale on one of the big Reg re-seller websites. I emailed them for more info and heard nothing back.

By coincidence, a friend told me about the DVLA auction, and I then discovered the reg I had enquired about was in the lot list. So, I'm thinking it was no surprise that I hadn't had a reply given the company couldn't own the plate yet.

I registered as a DVLA bidder and ended up getting the plate direct.

I would say that within a minute of the hammer coming down on my plate, my mobile rang and it was the Reg company, who had made no contact ever, telling me that the plate I had enquired about was "no longer available", but that they would run a search for me on similar ones.

Quite satisfying to be able to tell them I knew it wasn't available, as it had just bought it....

However, I do wonder if by flagging up my interest I had maybe encouraged them to bid for it, and maybe drove up the price I paid? A bit of googling throws up stories of people in same situation who were outbid at the auction, and then received the immediate call from same company, which had just bought it, offering to sell it to them.

DVLA auctioneer was very helpful with some of my first-time questions, but next time I would check lots first, and not flag up an interest to third parties.

companies advertising every plate they've ever sold regardless of current ownership is also commonplace

ask someone to phone them up re my current plate they're advertising "for sale". cue them then phoning me, obviously with a very different set of numbers

Do you know the email address by any chance? I've not found the address to enquire about unregistered lots before.

Thanks!

I requested the registration in July and it was put into auction the following February.

Looking at bidding for a plate in the next auction in Sept, I assume that it's fine to bid over the phone and no real disadvantage?

Yes - register for both internet and telephone bidding. The former will allow you to watch the auction before you get the call.

Whatever you do don't put in bids in writing (I forget what the term is). When I was on the phone I could hear plates going through with no live bidders (in the room, on the phone or on the net) solely on a single paper bid. The problem is that these were selling above the reserve. If these people had been live bidders they'd have been able to get the plate at the reserve.

do dvla still limit the number of phone lines so as to force people into large written bids ?

Phone lines were said to be limited but I didn't have any issue getting a slot with two weeks to go.

Is that not just for the sealed bid auctions, for live auction a pre registered bid should go for the lowest price bid, if no bids then the reserve, if not that is pretty dodgy.
