The verdict.....

"Aston feels mobile & alert; 12C clean and capable. Vantage offers superior noise, too. A sense of drama. Theatre.
The Mclaren is fast but leaves our outright desire holed below the waterline. The Aston Martin is less satisfactory as mere transport but it never forgets what it is supposed to do. It's supposed to grab you and make you want to drive it for no other reason than you desperately wawnt to. That it does. And that's why it gets our nod."

Not really a surprise, tbf. McLarens are just overpriced Porsches. Fast but dull. Astons turn you into 007.

All entitled to opinions but thats just nonsense. I been lucky to have been in both and driven both and although I may concede that the Aston's noise is great the McLaren is much more of an event to drive...maybe you mean Astons turn you into 107?..or maybe that you cant get your golf clubs in a McLaren.

Haven driven both I can see where they are coming from.

IF ONLY the McLaren sounded better it would make the experience so much more rewarding. I know turbo cars never sound great but there has to be something that can be done ?
Does the 650S address the noise issue

2 best sounding stock cars I have heard after my F355 GTS with Capristo, are the LP570-4 and 430 Scuderia.
Not that I'm biased lol
With more turbo cars coming I think we are seeing the last of an era. Snap them up while you can

Would you say it competes with the sounds of other cars in its price range?

I never get this 12C sound business I'm afraid. I've had great sounding cars (California, DBS, 430 with Capristo and CS) and the 12C rates well with sports exhaust. It has its own unique sound. It is quite 'angry' under full throttle and chatters away like mad on the overrun. The exhaust is an engaging companion on a thrilling drive. Admittedly I have a spider where you can hear more detail but if the implication is the turbo engine delivers a quiet note, that's just not correct.

Agree with LukeyLikey.. I have/had supposedly better sounding cars & I too love the 12C sound with Sports exhaust. Are we in the minority?? Can't comment on how much better sounding 650S supposedly is as haven't driven one yet..

You certainly don't feel like 007 when the sat nav doesn't work or the iPod connection fails or the dash lights up like a Christmas tree. I suppose there is something rather Q about the way that random buttons do completely unexpected things though.

Make that 3! 12C with Sports Exhaust is plenty loud enough and sounds awesome. It's something I'd argue that you start to learn as you drive and reap the rewards from doing so - getting better and better with every mile, just like most of the car to be honest.

I went in my first 650S a fortnight ago and there's no question they've refined the sound slightly; you get more on upshifts and slightly more overrun. 650S is a phenomenal car, then you realise that 12C has 95%+ of that and costs a huge wadge less... no brainer really.

On topic though, mine and my Dad's:

Makes for an interesting comparison; totally different given they are both come under the same sort of umbrella.

I'm not sure if that photo shows how small the Mc really is, or how big the Aston really is...

no because it looks a bit dull to drive, you can kick the back end out at 20mph off a round about, I don't want the car self correcting

or in the winter speeds will be far lower, I like to be in control, the 12C does not put the driver in control, it's off my list.

it's a GTR in a posh dress. but then owning one you already knew that ;-p

and you really think you are more fully in control of a r8 v10 plus or a 458 than a 12c where the electronics are at least as heavy.....?

The 12C, like every modern sportscar, has different settings that let you chose how much assistance you want. You can have none if you dare smile

Coming back to the original scope of the thread, and having owned both cars, in terms of performance, there is no comparaison betwen the 12C and the V12V.

The V12V is fun and powerful, a fantastic GT, but it does not have the prowess of the 12C chassis. And it lacks a few bhp as well.

I am so happy I did not listen to Autocar !
