We looked at a used roadster 6 years ago (black with red roof) which was being sold by MBW. It had been straight over the top of a roundabout and although repaired, it didn't feel right to drive. And it goes without saying that whatever you do don't buy an ex rental.

This is one of the ones I was thinking about. I spent about an hour looking for a photo of it last night that I had taken at the time as I was parked next to it at Brooklands last year, I remember someone saying that it wasn't as good as it looked.

Im getting a bit scared now to be honest. Lot of horror-stories.
Ill ask Steven to do an extended drive to make sure it also feels right.

Below some pics of the car being inspected on paint thickness. If someone notices this car or anything weird about it please let me know...

You'd have to say it's consistent. I don't know what's correct for these. A lesser car might only be under 200 microns thick, like my Porsche, for example.

Exactly this, and accident damage. A property developer I did business with bought one purely because it had a Mercedes badge and was expensive. He thought it was like a kitted up SL and drove it every day, parked it on the street and had zero mechanical sympathy with it. I remember telling him about carbon fibre construction and him having no clue what I was talking about.

I'm pretty sure he took a few knocks in London traffic at least twice then when I saw him a year later he was driving an E Class. Go figure...
here in Manchester I was at the time an 18 year old apprentice working in the city who had just passed my driving test. On my first day of the job my boss took delivery of a brand new SLR (perhaps one of the first in the country) he parked it on the street (king street) and the amount of attention it got was unreal! I was in awe of it instantly. He put some serious miles on it but had absolutely no clue about cars either, just saw it as the most expensive Merc! Since then I have driven a couple and still intend to buy one eventually (722 ideally).

I dont know if its true and will ask Brooklands, but ive been told that SLRs have a thicker paint due to the carbon exterior. Will verify this, so it can be helpful for the next person looking to get an SLR.

@WCZ: 722 would be ideal indeed, but those things have shot up in price like a rocket.... a "normal"roadster is a relative bargain to a 722 roadster, theyre like double the price or more??

This is the photo I took when at Brooklands. No plate on it so hard to identify although there can't be very many with the desirable red roof option.

Steve vetted the car, saying it was a very clean example. Needed some minor work with tyre pressure sensors and wheels and fuel filter which will be sorted.

Happy new SLR Roadster owner! smile

The most impressive part of that story is how well you have done in life at a presumably still young age. Well done!

Will be picking her up the 10th August and then driving down to Epernay and then back to Amsterdam. Looking forward to that trip!

Just wanted thank all for their input and help.
The SLR Roadster is now safely back in Amsterdam.

Very interesting car, bit of a split personality but thats what makes it great in my opinion.
Thanks to all for their advice!

Unfortunately, my girlfriend was diagnosed with appendicitus while in London so we had to rush her back to holland for surgery, as such we didnt have any chance to make pictures yet.

Ill write up a review of the car with my own experience and pics once I have a bit more time! Pinky promise wink
