P14 mule in Autocar
Discussion
The better the car is in the first place the harder it is to improve upon it. Cars have come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 years alone
We now have things like air scarfs, heated steering wheels and massage seats etc... Whilst nice they are hardly game changing.
DCT was a big change but from here on in its going to be nigh on impossible to get a game changing car over one generation especially if the product life cycle is 4 years or less even
P14 will undoubtedly be a better car than 650S but I'm not currently sold on the looks from what I have seen and not brave enough to put down a deposit on a car which will be virtually twice the price of what my 650s will be worth by the time it arrives

You seem very sure about all this, given no official details have yet been released.
Do you know any actual facts about this car or are you making assumptions based on forum rumours?
While I won't say what I stated was absolute irrevocable fact, based on what I was told by some people who should know, I doubt that post will be very different from what gets announced. Feel free to quote my post and tell me how wrong I was at Geneva17 though Do you know any actual facts about this car or are you making assumptions based on forum rumours?

All a bit glass half empty.
You never know, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Those who have seen it have confirmed that the Spanish spy shots were of the real car. There may be some styling details still to reveal, but what you see in those spy shots is what you will get. Dissappointing. All a bit glass half empty.

Every thread on McLaren tends to have two extreme characters on polar opposites on it – TP321 and RamboLambo. I understand RamboLambo’s love for the brand, given he owns one, but I've never managed to understand why TP321 just doesn't like McLarens? Missed out on one? Poor service from McLaren? Ron Dennis cut you up at the lights?TP321 said:

Looks like we are in agreement again. Miracles will never cease. As much as I love the brand I've been left a little cold with P14 looks at the moment.
I want to see a 570 LT spider and 488 speciale before I do anything else

I love all the supercar brands and have no particular loyalty to one. I have owned/still own Ferrari's, a McLaren and a Lamborghini. What brand I will buy next is no certainty and from what I have seen/heard so far on P14 I agree with TP321 that I'm disappointed from the looks department.
It looks far too like a Peugeot RCZ for my liking. Even my missus agreed with me on that

Don't put yourself down, sir. Besides, looks aren't everything. What brand I will buy next is no certainty and from what I have seen/heard so far on P14 I agree with TP321 that I'm disappointing from the looks department.

It will probably just be an evolution of the 650/570, in that it will use the same engine, carbon tub..etc..etc. What i was really waiting for was a car that looked nothing like the 570/P1. Something new. Yes it will be faster, but who really cares at this level? Its the experience that has to be different and better (how it feels, sounds and how it looks).
But it's probably (certainly?) not going to use the same 3.8 engine and tub. It'll likely have a 4.0 engine and a different carbon monocoque and I'd hazard a guess it'll drive much more like the 675 than 650 so marks quite a different driving experience to the car it's replacing. Chances are if that's true re different engine/chassis, you'll not stop whining about how you think everything Mclaren is doing is wrong and just come up with something else though.

Will it drive more like a 675LT ?Chances are if that's true re different engine/chassis, you'll not stop whining about how you think everything Mclaren is doing is wrong and just come up with something else though.
Its not meant to be a hardcore track car and no doubt they will leave room for a LT version at a later date

Purely conjecture on my part but given Mclaren have progressively tuned their cars to be more 'alive' having been very criticised early on for the 12c being normal on er.. normal mode, it would make sense for them to tune the standard models (which are the ones that they do need to shift in volume) more to the 675 which seems to be universally praised by the automotive press. The 570 already shows that, the car feels a good bit more '458 ish' for lack of a better description than the 650/12c at low speeds. The p14 will I suspect take that further forward. Its not meant to be a hardcore track car and no doubt they will leave room for a LT version at a later date

Maybe but I just don't see it being so hardcore in standard guise.Faster, better sounding and a little more playful at low speeds but its still got to appeal to the mainstream and be more useable.
The 650S is a more accomplished all rounder than a 675LT if you intend using it regularly.
I like the more sporty type car but found the 430 Scuderia a bit too far stripped out. 675 LT spider would be perfect for me but less so for the missus.
After 650S which she loves maybe P14 will be the half way house unless in the meantime 675 LT spider prices become more reasonable

I don't think it'll be very stripped out. And let's face it the 675 still comes with full alcantara or leather interior as you wish, sound system, nav etc so it's not really what I would call a stripped out car either (the scud shouldn't have been that either imo if only to hide the bad welding I still loved it though anyway ). Faster, better sounding and a little more playful at low speeds but its still got to appeal to the mainstream and be more useable.

The way the P14 drives I think will be much more modelled on the 675/570 than previous cars, ie very quick steering, feels alive at low speeds and such. It's what the journos want and Mclaren have been very keen to pander to them.

I'm sure it will be a better car than 650S with all the extra R & D time they have had and the rate of progress already displayed with each model but I'm just not convinced with the shape / look yet.The way the P14 drives I think will be much more modelled on the 675/570 than previous cars, ie very quick steering, feels alive at low speeds and such. I'm not a fan of some of the big hypercars either. A Pagani Zonda does nothing for me in the looks department with the big round helicopter like cockpit sitting over the front wheels.
To me the proportions don't make it a beautiful car.
If I had unlimited money the first car on the list for me would be a Ferrari F40

Pander? You make it sound like a negative.
The 12C was roundly criticized for lacking engagement. What were they supposed to do?
To repeat a previous poster, it does seem you have an axe to grind. Come on, fess up

Funnily enough, I don't tend to hear very much from people who actually own and drive the cars long term that lacking engagement is as much an issue as the journos suggest. You make it sound like a negative.

as for your last line, I have no idea what you're on about.
