Make sure you specify if you want Topaz to install for you, I heard over the weekend they also send some cars to a smaller installer in Ascot as they get it cheaper... same cost to you though!
The owner I spoke to was given the choice but worth checking if you weren't.

On the PPF front, Dub Customs over in Basildon do sterling work and their prices are far more reasonable than Topaz.
A number of the Youtube crowd use them; they'll also sort out any paint correction prior with their in house chap, Stuart @F1Wax on Instagram. The guys have been wrapping for years both PPF and standard wraps, and have done a 918, F12's, & many more.

Have personally experienced, and know a number of very happy customers with this lot. Well worth checking out.
I am not affiliated with them btw, just a big fan of their work! Wouldn't take mine anywhere else.

If McLaren build is so good, why did the gearbox only last 4K miles? Is it just a seal that failed or something more significant?
From my understanding McLaren don't make the gearboxes, these are bought in from Graziano in Italy as a 'sealed' unit and any warranty claims are sent back to them.

The common reported failure is mainly on cars which have done very few miles and it relates to a failed oil-seal. circa 4k miles on a 6 year old car is going to create as many problems as normal use so it can't be a huge surprise, but it does sound unreasonable for McLaren to stop Graziano supplying replacement seals to other gearbox specialists, especially those who service and repair other Graziano gearboxes as used on other cars.
Thank you for clarifying.

Good thread,
I'm actively looking to buy a 12C at the moment, just waiting for the "right one" to come up for sale.

I will be covering around 9,000 miles a year so I think the Mclaren warranty makes a lot of sense for me, but the majority of cars that come up for sale are not sold by franchised dealers so don't benefit from the 1 year Mclaren warranty.

I am aware you can "add it on" after 3 months but it's worrying me that in the 1st three months if something goes pop I might end up in trouble, or if it goes in for an inspection after 3 months to purchase the warranty the will find various things wrong with the car etc.

Or am I being unduly worried?

Get a SOR car where the warranty is transferable. I'd be surprised if most cars were not SOR to be honest anyway so in that case get the existing owner to put it on first but include the cost of inspection into the price.

Personally speaking, at this level, I would only buy from an official McLaren dealer or perhaps from a specialist like Alastair Bols. I know you will be paying more but it is piece of mind with such an expensive, complicated car. The warranty also doesn't come cheap but compared to a potential bill if somethings goes bang, I think it is a no-brainer. I bought my pre-owned 12C from McLaren Ascot late last year and I'm very happy with them so far. I intend to have the 12C serviced, paint protected and track prepared by them also.

Check out the buyers / owners guide here

The warranty scenarios are all explained, you wont go wrong with Alastair Bols for a 12C, he knows them better than almost anyone and is a thoroughly decent chap. Good luck

The McLaren extended warranty can only be transferred from one private buyer to another provided there is more than 90 days remaining on the policy. This means sor cars could qualify for a warranty transfer. If the car presently has a warranty on it and is correctly serviced with bulletins done then no inspection is required and further warranty can be arranged with a McDealer over the phone.
Once the warranty is in the new owners name cover starts immediately. I know because I made a claim after 3 weeks of ownership.FYI
