I look at this and I just think... why?
Gimmickry.
This. What's wrong with just changing the display like you can on the 570?Gimmickry.

It's not unique, Porsche did it in 1977 with the 928's instrument pod which moved up and down with the steering wheel so you always had a perfect view of the instruments. That was innovation with a purpose, this is... surface froth
But this isn't about something as simple as fixing the instrument binnacle to the steering column. This is a function in track mode to remove the instruments to allow a much better view of the track whilst still allowing the essentials to be displayed. That's unique, and rather cool They've released a video of the dash feature this morning.

Why do that?
Are they are saying is that in "normal" modes your view of the road ahead is being partially obscured by a large tablet-like digital instrument cluster? Or is this to simplify the information you need to take in when nailing it on track (which I thought was the advantage of a digital instrument cluster in the first place)?

Very different things - The 928 (one of my favourite cars) was about always giving you a good view of the dials. This is about improving driver sight lines when on track - maximizing the low scuttle to help you visually place the car. A small improvement perhaps but at least it has a driver benefit in mind. We'll need to try it out on track to make a judgement

That was a good system in the 570s , but the 720s interior looks mega, and the the way the instruments move down is unique. It is called progress, and it sets this car, and McLaren, apart from the opposition, by a distance!
Yes, the instrument binnacle is what sets a car apart from the opposition! How is a gimmick like that progress???

No point fighting the "iPhone" generation.
It's what they want - shiny new things with lots of gimmicks. I'm getting more convinced that my children's generation when they are older will have zero interest in the so called classics. They want hi tech and modern.
Hopefully prices will drop accordingly and I am still allowed to drive classics on the road .... not all that keen on new turbo engines, Fancy electronics and all that stuff even if I do find it all impressive It's what they want - shiny new things with lots of gimmicks.
