Bit of a drastic colour change on this one. I feel for the owner, what a shock.

According to that article a witness said:

"My son is a massive car fan - his first word was 'car' - so he was just amazed by what was going on.

"He says that the model is prone to catching fire because of the carbon-fibre body. Nonetheless it was an amazing sight, least of all something you'd expect to see on your way to Sunday dinner."

Er......ok.

LOOK OUT MCLAREN OWNERS! YOUR CARBON TUBBED SUPERCAR WILL SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST!

Ferrari owners smugly look on... rolleyes

Luckily, there are probably far more Ferrari known to have caught fire than McLaren.

Ouch. As would be expected, the fire appears to have started in the engine /exhaust bay.

Yeah, remember the launch of the 458 when they were catching fire on a daily basis and Ferrari had to do a recall. Maybe that's why they all come with a fire extinguisher now

Yes John because the carbon fibre brakes on F1 cars regularly catch fire don't they.

No kidding Sherlock wink

Speculation of the cause would be a more interesting topic. Perished fuel hose is normally a prime suspect. But in much older cars. This one?

No, I've enjoyed McLaren ever since visiting the factory to watch F1s in production circa 1998. A visit organised by the Maserati club. An era when infantile rivalries were less evident and a shared passion for cars was to the fore.

I saw a volcano orange 12c spider in Germany during the summer in a workshop with what looked like fire damage - it had a carbon-fibre engine cover and all the resin was burnt, the carbon fibre exhausts also looked like the resin had bubbled and discoloured. I wondered what could have happened - the car was in one piece so didn't appear to be crash damage

not to be argumentative, but it looks like MSO parts?

may even have been that car - it had the same carbon fibre exhaust tips and lots of other carbon

I read somewhere that the owner head a mechanical grinding noise and then it set on fire. That suggests a mechanical failure putting oil onto something hot, so a gearbox failure spraying oil on the exhaust is a safe bet.

Wouldn't be that car, as my understanding is that car became this car with further efforts from MSO.

Wow, catastrophic gearbox failure isn't what I'd expect tootling around country lanes. I wonder if there were any warning signs previous to this.

Pure speculation. Could be a number of small and simple things albeit with a catastrophic ending before a gearbox.

This is how one small incident gets blown out of proportion on the internet and before you know it wildfire spreads getmecoat

How many 458's went up in smoke in the first few weeks ? Don't see them having major gearbox issues either
