thats more expensive than main dealer, I had mine done for £1400 including trailered collection and delivery.

Been quoted £1136 for 7th service at Guildford. Servicing seems pretty reasonable - its if you need anything else doing it racks up pretty quickly!

Well, it had to happen at some point.

After over 2 years of behaving itself impeccably, my 675 decided to burst a hose when I used the lift for the first time in about a year.

Apparently, it's linked to dampers and the power steering.

Repair cost has been quoted around £600.

This happened when it was being collected for its service, which being its 6th birthday, cost was just over £1300.

A full warranty inspection was undertaken with nothing raised, but a corroded wiper arm was noted and the carbon effect centre caps are just starting to fail, so decided to replace them also.

With that, I have decided again not to spend a fortune on the warranty, and self warrant.

Just over 3000miles since its service last year, and, gasp, the car stays outdoors for convience of use.

On a footnote, I still have never plugged it into its charger.

I thought McLarens were supposed to be made of chocolate...;)

Steve at V was telling me about this, if you spec nose lift on a Ferrari or Porsche, it adds more weight because they have to bolt in an electric motor, pump, fluid reservoir and lines as well as the actual lift cylinders on each front wheel. On a McLaren you already have a electrically driven pump for the HPAS, so they just add an extra couple of valves and use that to supply the nose lift too, and to pressurise the linked fluid for the suspension in the Super Series cars.

Downsides are it takes a little longer to lift the car, and lift sometimes can be suspended if you're turning the steering while it's coming up. Upside is less weight and complexity - again following the Lotus principle of one part serving multiple purposes. (Plus I guess, the upside of HPAS in terms of feel).

Hope it's soon back with you, and as you say it doesn't sound like too high a burden of maintenance on such a great car.

Where are you getting the center caps - McLaren? Cost?

I had my wheels refurbed last week and the refurb place considered mine tatty enough that they weren't sure I'd want them refitted..... So think I need some new ones too.

Struggled to find any online though (I want carbon effect again with silver tick, but mine seem to be 46mm across which appears to be the less common size)

Funnily enough; searched my email account for centre caps, and came across an email from you Dave for payment on some Porsche centre caps we bought Raymond, for his hosting of coffee mornings at his pub in 2007…

Birmingham. Around £140 for all 4 fitted.

Might be wrong but I am sure I have seen them more expensive on ebay.

My next service in my 540 is due in a few weeks for it's 5th service and I've seen a lot of positive comments about the quality of service from V Engineering, they are relatively close to me so I'm weighing up keeping the full dealer history intact and getting it done at Guildford or NewF. In summary are there any cons breaking the uninterrupted main dealer history or not?

I switched from Guildford with warranty to V without 6 months ago. V have such a good reputation i think leaving McLaren network will have no negative impact. V owners wrote the service manuals and schedules for McLaren workshops. McLaren mechanics often come from BMW / Audi / Ford and are trained using manuals writren by the owners of V. I feel i am in much more knowledgeable and capable hands at V than in McLaren network. And V service is £499 all in. Winner winner chicken dinner.

My car had full McLaren service history. I took it to V, they spotted the wipers were misadjusted and sorted them, spotted the PAS pump noise was quite noticeable at 30-40mph and applied some sound deadening to the bulkhead, sorted a couple of minor suspension issues which hadn't been picked up by McDealer PPI, and updated a few software modules. (Apart from the suspension I'm not even sure they charged me for anything else)

Upshot is, after rolling out of their workshop my car is just that bit nicer to drive. That makes my car 'better' to me, I don't know how it would strike the market of potential buyers.

No, crucially their hourly rates are £90ph. make a BIG difference,

Yeah but that won’t include, air filters, cabin filter, brake fluid change and charcoal fuel filter as per Mclaren service schedule ( year 6 ) you can always do things cheaper and I get perhaps some of those parts don’t need changing but ultimately the cars not getting the same attention to detail.. each to their own though

Ok, I guess you know V better than I do, it does not as you say include the charcoal canister.
But having had conversations as to the requirement on why it's needed, I'm not staying with any mandated works without evidence of a requirement.
If you firmly believe you are better off in the network, as opposed to outside of it; that's your viewpoint, but it most certainly isn't my personal and very recent experience.

Yeah I like to keep my car within the franchise network included renewing the extended warranty, it’s little cost at the end of the day for piece of mind, heard nothing but good things about V engineering though and can see why people use them, well if your local ( ish)

Certainly the air filters, last year on my car at V they inspected them and they were basically as-new, so didn't need replacing. So I wouldn't consider it a lack of attention to detail, it's about making use of the life of the parts rather than replacing them for no benefit just to comply with a fixed service schedule which has to accommodate cars used in Australia, the Middle East, and other sandier parts of the world.

Yeah I get it, just changed my filters last week during service, probably not much wrong with them tbh, but while your in there and for the extra £90 get em changed I say, others obviously don’t have the same approach which is fine, I know mine are new and not .????% inefficient .
