A minimum three month warranty applies to any used car sold under consumer protection although some dealers do circumvent this by calling them trade sales. Independent dealers will generally provide 90 days because they are required to that minimum standard of time. Some of these are very flimsy warranties again just to meet minimum requirements.

There is no explicit 3 month warranty on used cars from dealers, but you do get significant legal protection under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
In short a car must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If it develops a fault that was not explicitly disclosed within 30 days of purchase you can get the seller to fix it or demand a full refund. You are legally entitled to a refund if requested.

Outside of 30 days but within 6 months, if the car develops a fault then it is assumed that it existed prior to sale and legally the onus is on the seller to prove that it was not there. If they cannot do that then again they must fix it or offer a refund as it was not of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.

It is, however, common to offer a 3-month warranty but many of these are indeed very flimsy. Eg they won't pay out unless the car actually breaks down, or anything found during a routine service is excluded, etc.

If you're considering a 3rd party warranty of any kind that's not backed directly by the dealer then watch this from 15:40 onwards

Summary: Don't do it!

Not really, sounds more like you just need to check the level of warranty cover you get. With the mclaren element, it just sounds like hes not use to dealing with them.

who buys a warranty with a limit of £1000 per claim on an expensive car?

This looks like a bargain

Seems like 650S have dropped £15-£20k in a year

It's cheap because it's brown.

How does warranty work with SOR?

Most Macs for sale outside the McLaren network appear to be SOR from dealers.

Sor is treated the same as a private sale as far as the McLaren warranty transferability goes

If you as the buyer are transferring money to the dealership, and not direct to the previous owner, then it is a business sale and you are covered for faults under the Consumer Rights Act against the dealer. Typically the dealer will purchase a 3rd party warranty from someone like Autoguard to help cover themselves there. That's one of the main reasons dealers can justify taking their cut for the sale, and the main reason buyers have more confidence buying from a seller. If you get half way home and the car starts to misfire you can just return it.

Then you have what Collecting Cars and PH auctions do, which is to take no part in the actual sale, sidestep any legal protections for the buyer, but still take the same level of cut without actually doing anything for the money. Which is why in my opinion CC and PH are completely taking the piss.

It does look like quite a nice car to be honest, I actually really like the colour.

I’ve not heard of the dealer, though. They have the 650S, a taycan and a few other cars under £30K. Their reviews on trustpilot are all from August last year, which probably means nothing as they might just be starting out etc. However, if I was interested, I’d get it inspected and take it from there!

ETA: actually they have 2 taycans and a 570S, that’s my mistake!

I transferred the seller’s McLaren warranty to me, then had them welch on a £5k claim, so don’t bother now.

McLaren budget for replacing anything sub-par with a new part while in a great many cases it’s just not needed. Thorney are excellent (in my experience) at doing a perfect job while replacing fewer parts with new, for a decent amount less money.

Had my 570 5 years and have found the McLaren warranty excellent to date - but have a really good relationship with the Dealer.

What issue did they 'welch' on?

They couldn’t collect for a month, during which it sat in a heated garage, not moving, so when it arrived at the workshop it was a week out of warranty and therefore the failed accumulators weren’t covered.

If you reported this issue to them before the end of the warranty, and they conveniently couldn't do the work to run out the clock, then that sounds very much like a call to a solicitor is required. Perhaps you have already consulted legal advice and the matter is closed, but if not, and this was me, I absolutely would not take that lying down.

It’s on the to-do list.
