I'm in the fortunate position of having an i3 and an M4. Maybe it's about time I found somewhere to give them a little drag race!
If you live near the Midlands I'll come and film it ;-) I've got a nice collection of camera's and mics ;-)Hi All
I am looking to try out a new larger battery Rex in a few weeks (whenever it's in at the the Dealer), but what do you all think about me managing a 150 mile commute each day? I drive 75 miles each way, mainly motorway (try to cruise at 75mph, but the M25 limits that a little!).
Currently we don't have any charging points at work, but the landlord appears amenable to me getting one fitted. Alternatively I can park on a friends driveway and charge via a standard 13amp socket.
Would this commute be achievable in the new Rex, if I charge at home each night and would I need to charge at work?
Many thanks
Rich

If you are getting a Rex, any commute is achievable, so long as you can stop to fill up the tiny fuel tank often enough
In regards to getting a charging point installed, I imagine there are incentives from the government /charging companies available to businesses which would benefit your landlord (tax write offs or something) which might make him even keener on helping you out?

I would think you would manage that with 125 miles of battery and 25 miles of REx if you can't charge during the day. I'll let you know for definite when I get my new REx!I am looking to try out a new larger battery Rex in a few weeks (whenever it's in at the the Dealer), but what do you all think about me managing a 150 mile commute each day? Would someone who has an i3 confirm what capacity the Rex tank is in the UK please? I read that it was limited in the US to 9 litres (1.9gallons) but in Europe we have access to the full tank (2.4 gallons). However, I keep reading UK reviews which say it only has a 9 litre tank, and Zenith (my company car lease company) also say it is only 9 litres in their specs. So I'm a bit confused!
Basically trying to work out if the new i3 94ah will have the same tank in the UK or if (like the US) the increased battery will mean they can remove the limit on the tank (if indeed it is limited in the UK too!)
Any help would be gratefully received!
Thanks

Whilst I don't have the answer you are looking for, I'd be concerned if the 0.5 gallon discrepancy is of interest to you because you're planning on regularly needing it.
I had an i3 REX for a week last year and:
I had an i3 REX for a week last year and:
- a) the petrol engine really is noisy, especially around town at low speeds
- b) on the motorway one night I exhausted the battery so drove 70 miles back home on REX power alone - with the headlights + other user comforts on, I couldn't get above 60-65mph
The petrol tank is not restricted in the UK, just in the US, so 2 uk gallons available. I don't think the Rex engine is that noisy - it's not silent but it only seems noisy compared to no ICE and at a reasonable speed you barely notice it. Running the battery right down and only then firing up the Rex is not the best way - but you can learn that over time. I have only done 200 miles on petrol of the total 5500 I have done in my Rex as I am a bit too obsessed with not using petrol! I couldn't survive on just a Bev though - my most regular distance is a round trip of about 80 miles. I could do with the bigger battery but it's 2 years 7 months until the contract hire is up so that's irrelevant to me for now
Morning EV people.
The wife and I are going to get an i3 as a second car having went a looked at a few on the weekend.
BMW sales woman was useless, she didn't know how long it took to charge, the range etc so I gave up and thought I'd ask you lot!
We have never had an EV before so how does it work in terms of charging? Do we simply get an extension lead and plug it in or do you have to have a charge point fitted at home?
Also what is the real world range of the i3?

I charge overnight using a dedicated 32A chargepoint, using Economy 7 .. works out at 1p/mile. Yes I strongly suggest you go this route, an OLEV grant is available.
Range - depends upon the weather a lot and your speed. 70mph motorway in winter at zero Celsius, probably 65miles. REX (range extender) would double this. The new 94Ah will increase this by 50%. As a local runabout, I get 80+miles (before the REX is needed). I've done 3Kmiles, using 3litres petrol, rest either home, location or ecotricity charged.
I have a Rex, done 7k miles in 6 months in it, using approx 2 gallons of petrol. I have a regular 78-mile round trip that I got the car for - 54 miles motorway, 10 rural and 14 urban. In cold weather it's a struggle to do it without any petrol, even sticking to no more than 60mph but at the moment I can do it without too much trouble. that said, if I drove at 70mph on the motorway in Comfort (the least economical setting) and didn't drive gently on the rest of the journey I don't think I would make it on leccy alone at any time of the year. Managed the 39 miles in this morning on 38% charge, though I was trying harder than normal to be gentle. My best range achieved before the rex kicked in is 94 miles (including 54 motorway) a couple of weeks ago

About to go for one of the Whitewater lease deals in the morning, but still umming and ahhing about the virtues of BEV vs REX. Though finding the Facebook group really helpful. Anyone know what the real range will be of the 94Ah BEV as the new battery might well swing it for me?
Nobody's got one yet! So take the worst range figure and multiply by 1.5 is the best guess. I'm guessing that a REX lease is not much more than a BEV (though that might have changed with the 94Ah), so that might be your best option.modeller said:

Have you seen the deals available from your local dealer? You might be able to do better than Whitewater. I'm still finalising the spec of mine but hoping to order the 94Ah BEV next week.
