Mids, I agree completely and have had the same experience.

Rex also helps you make "good progress" if you are doing a motorway run. Yesterday I had a 80 mile motorway journey which would be achievable using a BEV at more moderate speeds. But if you want to travel at the unofficial motorway speed limit, then you can just activate the Rex early and it will give you the boost in charge that you need.

As an aside, yesterday I had quite abit of running around to do and decided that I was going to do it without using the Rex.

Result ?

Over 102 miles on the battery and 3 miles on the Rex ...

I surprised myself !!

Thinking about the original twe choices..

How about option C) An extra 5-10kWh of batteries in the space where the REX goes?

You'll get £3,000 off the list for not having the REX. IIRC Batteries are about £400/kWh at the moment. So that woul dget you another 7.5kWh.

With that much you'd be guaranteed to get over 100 miles rangeand maybe as much as 150. I'd then be almost close enough to make my regular 150 miles trip with minimal time stopped for charging.

In fact I'd have happpily paid an extra £10k to get double the battery capacity thats standard at the mo. By the time you've spend £33k on the car with options going the rest of the way isn't so painful. It would be yet another 100kg heavier - but that's stuill not a heavy car.

Probably my biggest worry about buying now... about 6 months after I get mine delivered they'll announce a 40kWh version using v1.1 batteries.

Does the ratio in which these are selling, mean you can get a REX with a shorter delivery time?

I have REX. Done 11k so far in the car and only put in £200 of fuel. However the times I have used fuel have been essential and I would have been knackered without it. (Plus I may have once forgot to plug it in overnight !)

I've ordered a BEV because we have 2 other cars for the longer journeys. If it's your only vehicle then the REx has to be the best choice. I do think it's very smart of BMW to offer the 2 options thereby covering all the bases.
On a separate note, I had a spirited passenger ride yesterday evening in a Tesla, what a stunning vehicle. I even (quite) liked the massive screen and definitely liked the power !

I'm trying to calculate your mileage as mpg equivalent

I understand it takes about 22kwh to charge so thats like 153mpg i think? Over your 11k miles.

Assuming 45mpg petrol at £200, thats 1,530 miles on petrol, leaving 9,470 on EV, 110 mile avg range on pure electricity, 86 charges are £3 each charge. £458 total cost

That is pretty incredible and is just over twice as efficient / cheap to run as the best hybrid. Nice!

surely any plug in hybrid will do similar numbers as leccy is soooo much cheaper than fuel and therefore massively skews the numbers (assuming you run on battery predominantly)

I did that back in August and am still trying to work out how to afford the Telsa so I can cancel my i3 order. My next thing is to look at what I'd spend on Fuel on the rex. The problem at the moment is the 85kWh Telsa with the electronics pack leather and parking sensor comes in at £63k after £5k grant! The finance will cost me over £20k between now and 2020 :-(

However I feel the £63k Telsa is better value for money than the £33k i3 after grant. Although expensive - if you compare the performance and space with other cars - they are all well over £50k. And suits my needs more as I do a round trip from the south up to the midlands every other week. But put another way - I could get a based model BEV i3 and an REX with options for the same price as the Tesla! LOL

Final option might be best... get an i3-rex now and when the Telsa Model 3 comes out in 2017 get one of those for me and give the i3 to the Mrs. Or a used Model S ;-)

Tesla definitely on my shopping list but not now :-( When they sort it so you drive into a tesla garage and then your low charge batteries are swopped over for a fresh back in a few minutes, then...... (this I'm led to believe is the goal)

If you're self employed the i3, on PCP, is very cheap over 3 years.

Well if you're a 40% tax payer, it's £12k off your first tax bill for a start.

More of a statement about the benefits of self employment than the i3 in particular, or am I missing something?

Fully electric cars do attract a lot of tax benefits for the self employed.

Is this a reference to 100% First Year Allowance for the i3? So you can set off the full purchase price against tax.
eta - I'm not sure this would work with PCP though?
