Recently retired and will shortly be in the market for a change of cars. We now live locally to my family but my wife's relatives are 250 miles away and our Daughter lives in Germany.

Question is I was prepared to pay between 10/13k for a newish Leaf and maybe another 5/7k on a second car as I play a lot of golf, so definitely need two cars. I'm now in two minds between a Leaf or a Prius or better still open to more suitable suggestions?

I thought my mind would of been made up after organising a weeks test drive of a Leaf, but due to terrible customer service it didn't happen, so have no experience of full electric cars.

I have an outlander phev. Charges from the mains and runs full electric for up to 30 miles, but also has a 2.0 petrol for long journeys. I recently took it over to The Netherlands and Germany and it surprisingly good on the motorway.
Plenty of room for golf sticks, so what you lose to a leaf in terms of a shorter electric range you would gain in only needing the one vehicle.
Not yet available to buy outright for your budget but there are some cheap lease deals.

Seen a lot of Nissan leaf around my way. Seems like a popular run about car.

I have a works Prius and really is very cheap to run and a decent car. It gets me 70mpg or 60mpg in colder weather, 50mpg is its a very short journey. But then there is the plugin Prius which I honestly think is the best option this side of full electric / i3 range extender.

However I'm very excited about the smaller more affordable tesla due in the next year or 2.

You have to decide what your requirements, the tesla might just be a one car solution. Space, luxury, performance, range and soon to be affordable(ish).

Do not dismiss the Vauxhall Ampera at that price, about 30 mile plug in range and a very decent petrol/hybrid range of 300 plus. Also big enough for your bits and pieces and comfy enough for a continental run.

Thought about, and fancy an Ampera, but costs used seem high for my budget and wouldn't leave a lot for a second car. They all seem to be through dealerships and not many private sales where a possible deal could be done.

If I could convince the other half that a small runner may be good enough for short local trips it could be the perfect solution. We could then use the Ampera for the longer trips. Reading up on it though they don't seem to be that economical on long distant trips compared to say, a Prius.

You will have to decide your priorities, if most of your mileage is short journeys which I assumed it was then a plug-in like the Ampera will be far more economical, if your main mileage is long distance then quite frankly your better off with a BMW 2litre diesel......seriously.
The Prius is a compromise between the two, you need to work out just how much mileage the long and short journeys you will be covering.
