Finally after 5 months and 6 days I get confirmation that my 330e m-sport is in the country and delivery expected 3/3/17.

I've spent the last four months clicking on here almost daily, checking out YouTube for new clips to watch, becoming obsessed I'd say.

So, a question for all you lucky owners out there. What would be you top three tips? For me to try/ or be aware of when she arrives.

0) Be kind to her, run her in gently - and although the owners manual simply says run in for 1300 miles, I'm going to make sure I run the engine for 1300 miles before taking it above 4500rpm. Use the connected drive portal online to check how many electric-only miles you've done.

1) get into the connected app. It's not great at times but it's the easiest way to keep on top of departure times to make sure you're preconditioning and charging for departure.

2) use the heated seat and set cabin heating to 16 degrees to maximise range

3) have fun!

I gave you a 0 item because I think it's important but not really what you were asking!

And actually, other than figuring out how to maximise range over what is an ideal commute (12.5 miles) I don't have much advice as it all just seems to work flawlessly. Others' experiences will be different, but for me it's nigh on perfect.

Guys,

Can any of you offer me further information re the preconditioning function please? I'm intrested specifically how it works when setting it through the i-drive interface in the car, rather than the app.

Can you set days? can you set it to cool the cabin as well as heat it?

Very little info out there, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, today's the day! If it turns up! I will be very sad to see my XF sat in the office car park for a while until it goes back.I have a feeling that I'm going to miss it. Probably mostly the boot size but definitely the poise and presence it gives out. This will be my first ever BMW.

Hi

I'm getting an M330e in March. Can anyone tell me if the "M" badges on each flank and / or boot lid come as standard on the M330e, are they a factory extra or are they a dealer fit?
It's not an M330e!

It's a 330e M-Sport. A subtle, but very important difference.

Are you one of those who've previously had an M116d? wink

Can anyone tell me if a pram will fit in the boot comfortably or will it be a struggle? I know you don't get a 3 series (let alone a PHEV that loses boot space for batteries) for the boot, but still useful for me to know.

Handy the comment regarding run it in for 1300 miles as I know from the word go my foot will be planted so I will have to watch that smile

It's arrived! Chap had just finished getting it off the low-loader when I got to work.
First thing I noticed is that there are "i" performance badges instead of M-Sport badges mentioned above. Just below the charge flap and one on the other side. Mine is an SE. Interesting, I don't remember any badges on the Sport I had on loan.

Seems all good so far, 15 miles on the clock, just under half a tank of petrol but but the battery is flat. I just had a quick drive around the car park.

First impressions on the boot is that it's still a reasonable size actually. It would still take a couple of medium size suitcases or largish soft bags, A pushchair would go in but there wouldn't be much room for any thing else. To be fair it's no smaller than the Mazda 323F GTi boot I had many moons ago!

You can't set days which is slightly annoying. You can give it two separate times, and set it to charge immediately, or for departure (I think I've got that right; the app view is slightly different, being charge immediately or using off-peak tariff which you can also set times for - I set mine so it finishes charging around 6am as I've found a freshly charged battery seems to give slightly better range). And you can set whether to precondition for departure - it will decide whether to heat or cool depending on temperatures and the temp it aims for is not configurable - it's not what is set on the air con system.

When you end a journey the iDrive offers you to change settings - particularly useful on a Friday as you may want to disable the precondition for the weekend - I tend to do that and then set different times through the app for what I'm doing that weekend.

HTH!

That's useful actually, otherwise I would have to always remember to change it before the weekend.
Interesting that it chooses the preconditioning temperature according to the outside weather (I was sure it would be whatever the air conditioning was set to), hopefully that works well!

Many thanks for the explanation.

pre condition doesn't come on at weekends - BMW assume everyone works M-F. Haven't tried setting a timer at the weekend, so maybe that works on the day, but if you have a regular time like departure at 7.00 a.m. it wont activate on Saturday or Sunday. I have checked this i.e. car is still iced up on a frosty weekend morning. If you're off for a few days you have to turn the timers off and then remember to turn them back on again if you don't want to waste a bit of electricity (I'm guessing about 10p a time).

Also there is a handy pre-condition button on the remote key so you can use from inside the house assuming you're in range e.g. press 20-30 minutes before going out at the weekend. Sometimes the app will fail to send a "pre-condition now" instruction to the car e.g. if BMW servers are down. The remote button is "on" only, with no visible confirmation from the car, but you can see that charging has started in the app as a way of checking without going outside and listening if it's on. If you press by mistake you have to get into car and manually switch the fan off - same for app but it takes a longer press to activate. I have pressed the pre-condition button on the remote instead of the boot opener a few times. For the 2 regular timers the app sends them to the car where they're stored, you can also set/change them in the car.

Agree with 2) all day long. I tend to ignore the issue but if you really need to maximise range, do not use the air-con. There is a huge difference if you do not use the cabin heating, yet the seat heating uses next to nothing.

Then just go for 3) Have fun. And enjoy.

1 - set it to max e-drive to see how many other cars you can burn off at traffic lights on electric only, and drive at 70 mph on electric - just because you can, but not very far......

2 - use pre-condition

3 - at some point you will spend 20 minutes or more faffing round in a car park trying and probably failing to get a public charge all for about 50p of electricity - this will likely be on a cold, wet, windy occasion with your family standing round moaning at you. They can't be sat in the car as you need to lock it at some unknown point in the process that will be completely different to the previous type of charge point you tried and failed to use, you'll also have to move your car several times during this experience as the charge point you parked in will be the one that's not working, and even assuming you've got the right app for that system, you'll find it wants some more detail from you to actually work or it's lost your login details that you can't remember because you registered 3 months ago just in case.

A few non 330e specific things - earlier in this thread there is mention of the numbered buttons being programmable - very handy, also if you have an i-phone (not sure about android) the voice button on the steering wheel acts as a siri button - so you can say phone fred mobile or read / send messages from fred, play coldplay etc. etc.

TBH I wouldn't worry too much about running in.. the cars are bench run and technology is a lot more advanced than the days of running in for 1k miles..

I personally find running in should include a mixture of revs and giving the beans whenever you fancy.. Although I did wait about 4-500 miles before flooring it.. on 10k miles now and doesn't miss a beat. I've had a few VXRs which are usually known for chocolate pistons and never had a single engine issue with running in this way.. plus if it's a lease itlll be gone in 2 years in which case it'll still be almost new. I've got mine for 4.

If you don't want to use the battery then sport mode works well, although really stiffens steering.
If you want to overtake in ecopro then flipping to manual shift for a quick blast then back to auto once past saves having to put your foot to the floor and waiting.

Only gripe with the car is the gearbox being auto.. I usually park too close to my garage and have to roll back slightly.. if you try to drive with the door open the car brakes and goes into park mode which is a pain lol

Hmm that's interesting. I haven't noticed that, I guess because I've always turned the timers off (although note that if you turn both timers off you don't seem to be able to charge with off peak tariff - you can only select charge immediately). Setting a timer on Saturday though will cause that timer to be used on Sunday as well.

good to know it's not just me I guess - mine's an iPhone 6 on iOS 10.2.1 looking at app reviews there seem to be a number of people saying it's broken, but from a week ago whereas mine just broke last night. Have emailed BMW i customer services so will see what they say. Pity as even though I don't like the app update re maps I still use it most days and logging into the portal via browser is long winded
