This is the best post in the whole thread.
I am on my 2nd i8 and it sums up my view exactly.
Re values dropping, i hate losing in depreciation. With the i8, the car is so good that i really don't care. Quite strange.
Future values will be dictated by when bmw stop making them. I hope there are lots of haters and no one wants them...
Totally agree Eric. And thank you for the thumbs up!I am on my 2nd i8 and it sums up my view exactly.

Surely spec doesnt impact the price, as they're all the same spec. The only differentiator is the internal/external colour, and wheels.
Mileage also of course... K2MDL said:
And no they are "not all the same spec". Get the brochure and read the options. Full leather interior (different levels), colour choice adds ££, different wheels, to name a few.
I did read the brochure. I know there are technically options available, I dont believe any/many have an impact on resale. Whilst colour, interior and wheels cost money, I dont think of them as 'spec' which would influence the resale; they're just personal choice variations. Nothing additional has been put on the car. If someone wants ivory interior, they aint going to care that the previous owner spent a grand on full black leather. Similar story with paint colours.I think the only thing of any materiality that might add a couple of pounds to resale is the stereo upgrade (worthless to me though).
At least you read the brochure! I for one wouldn't buy without full leather interior and indeed the 20" alloys, (as with the full spec of mine). Whilst I agree it may not affect the resale too much it will be easier to sell over an above another without at least these two options.
What I will admit is that even the very base spec interior is a lovely place to be in, but no way would I buy one with the standard wheel option. Fortunately for spectators most haven't got the dreadful standard spec alloys.

Note that all the wheels, even the standard ones, are 20". I'm actually not that averse to the standard ones, although I can see why they dont have wider appeal. I've spec'd the upgraded W-style wheels on mine though. What I will admit is that even the very base spec interior is a lovely place to be in, but no way would I buy one with the standard wheel option. I also like the standard interior, and I actually prefer the look of the mixed leather/fabric to full leather. I am not a fan of the black, as feel its too dark. However again, I spec'd the upgraded full leather Carpo Grey interior as I wanted the blue stitching. It feels quite ludicrous to pay £1850 for contrast stitching, but heyho.

I love the idea of an i8, in fact I think I've convinced myself to buy a used one in the next 6 months as their values seem to have taken a big hit in the last year. Why is that? I was talking to a main dealers mater tech the other day and he said they are just not selling any, new or used and he had 4 new cars in stock.
Have new I8 sales really fallen off a cliff? Are people concerned that the current version will be very out of date as soon as the next iteration is launched?
The irony is I've seen more I8s on the road than I3s Have new I8 sales really fallen off a cliff? Are people concerned that the current version will be very out of date as soon as the next iteration is launched?
^^^ this.
IIRC the RRP is £99k. BMW support it to 5 or 10k plus the £5k back from the Gov gets the "poverty spec" down to £85 to £90k. Knock-off the first year normal depreciation and that's probably the trade-in on a 15 plate boggo car, so circa £65-70k.
(Most owners push it through a company and this greatly amplifies the savings versus anything vaguely similar, and can hence move them on without huge loss)

The 99k is already accounting for the 5k government grant (which goes to zero after 29Feb).IIRC the RRP is £99k. BMW support it to 5 or 10k plus the £5k back from the Gov gets the "poverty spec" down to £85 to £90k.
A painful real-life depreciation example here.
