So who is getting a Model 3?

That's the Zurich store. The S is a very common car here now (outsells all other electric cars combined & was equal to the E class sales last year). There are Tesla stores across the country & I would expect similar queues elsewhere. That people are queuing up and even camping out overnight to sign up before they've even seen the car is pretty incredible. Even if you figure many of them are just going to sell the car as soon as they get it, it's not something I've ever seen for a car.
Also, 8.30 pm in California seems a daft time for the launch. It's going to be 11.30 pm even on the US' Atlantic coast. Apple generally start their events around 10 am so that it's a more reasonable time in the rest of the Americas and Europe.

I strolled over to Oxford St branch (and onto hotel for order) and placed my order.
Fully refundable if it turns out to be no good, but with the GT2 or (soon to be 458) in the garage for *fun* and the Model 3 for trudging into London every day for free, seems like a pretty good garage to me. Add in a couple of superbikes and I feel all set.
I don't expect to see the car before 2019, by then I might be looking to sell the Merc 350e, so all good.

Same thoughts here. It's not much money to tie up and it could be a wise decision to reserve now, depending on how production ramps up.Fully refundable if it turns out to be no good, but with the GT2 or (soon to be 458) in the garage for *fun* and the Model 3 for trudging into London every day for free, seems like a pretty good garage to me. I expect to keep our ICE car for a while and there will be enough of a contrast between the two to keep us interested I reckon.
Honestly, even 6 months ago, the notion that I would be putting a deposit down on an electric car would have had me in stitches.
How times change...

From the specs I can see with a probable price of £30k and likely 200 mile range it's the only decent EV proposition out there. Every other falls short. Some shorter than others.
Would having a model 3 at £30k mean the rest of the EV market is going to have to slash prices to compete? I'd think the i3 is dead in the water at its current price point.
The model 3 is nearly 2 years from reaching the UK. By then 200 miles will be no big deal - the i3 is about to get a bigger battery which with range extended is likely to make 200 miles viable, and thats before a further year of developments.Would having a model 3 at £30k mean the rest of the EV market is going to have to slash prices to compete? Also bear in mind that tesla, like all manufacturers so, are playing the marketing game... "the model 3, from 30k will have a range up to 200 miles" which actually means the 30k car won't do 200 miles and won't be allowed to use the super chargers, but the 45k car will..". Why would they make a car very similar to the S70 that costs 20k less?

The only reason I didn't go today is because I haven't seen the thing! I'll be going down tomorrow morning providing it's awesome
You should have gone. They had a photo of the Model 3 that's going to be at the launch tonight, but we weren't allowed to capture images from the screen...Then I woke up and realised it was all just a dream
I do wonder what was going through the heads of the Mercedes sales people when they saw this.

Two videos of Tesla stores with queues of 500+ people in front of them...

The Tesla store in Düsseldorf is literally next-door to an Apple store. The Tesla queue runs right across the front of it.
