Sustainable is not the same as free. They've already announced that people buying a Tesla from the start of this year will pay a fee to use their supercharger network. As the technology becomes more mainstream the costs will increase.

Even if you have solar panels at home, using them is not free - they have an installation cost, need a certain amount of maintenance and have a finite lifespan (especially some of the power electronics). And then people forget that for three months of the year in the UK you get very little from a solar panel. So far as we know, Musk hasn't yet broken the laws of physics.
Uh huh, and what about places where you can make electricity from the sun 9 months or more of the year?

A free supercharger is obviously not a sustainable business model, the aim of having it free for early adopters was to act as a sweetener for the deal and to encourage uptake. As the technology becomes more mainstream, the costs are likely to decrease through competition.
Imagine if every petrol station you know also had vehicle chargers that you could pay to use, do you think they would compete on price?

Supercharging was never free, it was included in the price of the Model S. Now Tesla has 'unbundled' it ready for the Model 3 which will have a much lower upfront cost.

...anything vaguely affordable just looks rubbish.
Indeed, the Zoe and Leaf look like special needs vehicles - just awful to look at.

I saw a Model X today for the first time in the flesh. (White in Cirencester).

Lookef fugly however the Model S I think is quite a good looking thing.

(Not adding to the '3' thread but there you go).

So car manufacturers, can you please hurry up and release a car that's affordably to the average UK new car buyer i.e. around 30-35k but not make it look like it was a reject from the Jetsons cartoon. Something that looks like a slightly futuristic BMW\Alfa saloon or equivalent SUV would suffice.
Errrm....isn't that the Model 3?

The Model 3 looks like an undercooked BMW from about 8 years ago. Overly conservative and unsure what to do with the front end.

I'm really looking forward to mine. Placed my reservation in store on 31st March 2016, the day before the unveiling to the world.

200 miles is plenty for 99% of my driving needs, I'll opt for the dual motor, performance model with ludicrous mode and get the bigger battery but only as i think it's a pre requisite of other options listed above.

I don't have solar but may get it in the future. I also live within 5 miles of 3 super chargers, right opposite where i do my weekly shop.

The additional convenience of having full range each morning is just brilliant to me.

We have a Model X due to arrive in March, but thats the family wagon, the 'P`version of the Model 3 is what I really want.

Exclusive: Tesla is testing a Model 3 mule with a 70 kWh battery pack and dual motors (Model 3 70D)

Some potential battery sizes now coming out for the 3, at 4 miles per kWh 70kWh of usable energy will be 280 miles of range. The top spec car should be able to crack 60 in sub 3seconds,but will be £70-80k based on the fact the top spec S is more than double the cost of the cheapest S. Stil if the performance is there itll sell like hotcakes,£70k is the really the cheapest S you can buy once you add options and the X is another pricing league, in comparison the 3 will be a 'bargin'.

I haven't put down a preorder yet, waiting for more details and also looking at iPace, but Musk has said existing Model S/X owners can jump the reservation que so got plenty of time yet to preorder. So hopefully we will have a fully electric driveway by 2019/2020, cannot wait smile.

I'm really looking forward to my Model 3. Put the deposit down on the first day, so looking forward to more info now! Since the original preview event I've been posted some sketches of the design, but haven't heard anything else and there isn't much online. Anyone know when more info or 'phase II' of the unveil will be?

The intention of the super charger network is to assist in long distance travel. This notion has been supported by the charger credit system that was introduced for all new cars from the mid of January. As you pointed out you will have a full battery when you set off and can fill again overnight. So really you want to be checking the location of chargers circa 150 miles away :-)

Sorry does nothing for me, just looks like a melted Focus. Plus it's at least 18 months away in the UK.

The reveal part II was a joint announcement that introduced the v2 automation hardware for all cars produced from last last year. This adds the ability, with future software updates, to allow for full autonomy. See https://electrek.co/2016/10/20/tesla-new-autopilot...
We should learn the date of the part 3 reveal when Tesla announce their earnings results on Feb 22nd.

I think it'll look considerably better with a front numberplate on it.

Other than the odd slab of plastic on the front I think it's a pretty good looking car, in an understated sort of way. Certainly more to my taste than the awful looking things coming out of Germany in this sector these days. frown

I reserved before the launch. Just a few hours before, but enough that I'm confident I'll be one of the first few hundred UK owners.

Even allowing for the fact that RHD cars for the UK won't be a priority and they'll be supplying staff and Californians before anyone else, the resources Tesla are currently putting in place for parts, production and supply chain management doesn't give me any reason to think I'll be waiting until August 2018 for mine.

So it is the 18 months before they come to the UK you think is wrong, rather than you are getting yours well ahead of others in the UK.
