Tethered is the lazy option IMHO.

It also means if you ever damage the cable or connector you'll need an engineer visit and have to pay the inflated the cost of a new cable from the manufacturer. With un-tethered you can just buy another cable and away you go.
It's really not that difficult to change them.
Depends how long it takes to get an engineer out I suppose? Wouldn't be tempted to mess with it myself and could be a pain if it's being relied on.

Still not seen a post so far that suggests it's anything more than laziness anyway. How long does it take to get a cable out of your boot and plug it in, 30 seconds? Takes longer than that to sort out my current 3 pin charger we use for the i3 and that's not exactly a hardship..

ironically i was sold a rolec because i need to be able to turn on/off the charger via an app

only to find out that the rolec app does not support this ....
And I haven't been able to get the smart charging function to work either. Kind of ironic when Rolec call it HomeSmart!

It's really not difficult when you've already bought a prepared new cable for the job. Images and guide.

Had my PodPoint installed 2 years ago and its been perfect. I went with them primarily because their standard install covers far more scenarios that other companies would charge extra for, but wouldn't say how much extra until they turned up on install day.

The unit is fairly large, but its circular so it's easy to wrap the cable around. They also supply a holder for the connector if you go tethered - which I would recommend. No faffing about with a separate cable, putting it in the boot when it's wet etc. The cables that came with my car are coiled too, which is not ideal as they tend to hang 2 foot off the ground which would prevent you walking down that side of the driveway, putting the bins out etc. It takes me about 5 seconds to plug the car in with a tethered lead and its just become second nature now.

When it’s raining and the cable is buried under stuff in your boot you will wish you had teathered!

We've got a tethered PodPoint. Works fine. IMO tethered is better if you're using one charger for two cars. Obviously cable length is critical. Haven't looked at the app since we had it installed. Did get the optional key lock - useful if you're going to be away for any length of time with both cars.

As I've said, I'd go untethered but have a cable permanently connected. I wouldn't be using my 8m travel cable!

Won't your "permanently connected" cable quickly disappear in the hands of a scrote as soon as they realise what these bloody things cost? That's one reason we went tethered. At least if they try to nick the whole charger there's a good chance they'll electrocute themselves.

Possibly, bit I'm not hearing much about cable thefts from the boots of EV cars, so perhaps the juice isn't worth the squeeze?

Coming back to this, I’m about to go ahead with the podpoint which seems like a middle ground between the Rolec and the mini pro and bp Chargemaster.
Podpoint said they will be doing an update over the air so you can set charge times and stop charging via the app like the mini pro
Atm the availability seems to be 7kwh or 22 but I understand 22kwh is not available for the majority of homes.
Are we going to see something better than 7kwh charge points anytime soon or will that be the best available for now? Thanks

22kW requires 3 phase so yeah, most homes don't have it. Thing is most cars can't use it anyway, only the Zoe and some old Teslas.

7kW is likely to be the maximum for the foreseeable future. It's more than fast enough for most requirements though, about 30 MPH in a decently efficient car (or as low as 15 MPH in an Audi Turd, the absolute worst case possible). Most cars can only charge at max 7kW on AC anyway.

Yup was thinking Etron here. Will take around 11/12 hours for a full charge. If say 11kwh were to become available it would make it easier for an overnight charge but guess 7kwh will have to do for now.

Yep, but it's never going to happen, at least in the short term. You'd need to upgrade your home's supply and that is unlikely to be cheap. You won't be charging it up from empty anyway, mostly from partly charged and you won't even need to charge every day either unless you do long journeys all the time.

Surely this is only really an issue if you wait to regularly use the full range on consecutive days whilst being at home for under 12 hours that night? I can't see that being a particularly common use-case and even for people who do do that, it'd only require a very quick top-up at a public charger to get the extra range.

Most 'green' tariffs with a rate for overnight have limited time for charging - a mere five hours I seem to remember in one case.

5 hours at 7kW, approx 35kWh with losses. Easily 90 miles in most cars and conditions. Not bad for circa £2.

Certainly much more than most people use most days.

Looking to buy a type 2 to type 2 cable,
Anyone have any websites for recommendation?
Found Evcables.co.uk the cheapest and also comes with a 5 year warranty. Anyone used them before?

I used evonestop.co.uk no complaints from me. Bought 3 things so far: type 2 to Type 1 (5m) for the outlander, type2 to type2 (10m) for tesla and type t2 to type1 converter so I can get rid of the 5m cable.
