I'm really disappointed by the lukewarm reception to this car.

Our XC40 PHEV is due back in Feb, and this was high up on the list of potential replacements. The lack of a speedo in front of the driver rules it out completely, but the reviews I've watched and read make the touchscreen UI sound like a real mess.

Back to the drawing board, as February draws ever nearer. I think I'm going to take a look at the new Hyundai Kona instead. Similar size, 300+ mile range, and a slightly more traditional interior. Not as interesting, but potentially more liveable.
If you want quirkyness, have you seen a Smart #1 in the flesh? They have a small dash panel in front of the driver, and HUD on the higher-spec versions. More rear legroom than it's Volvo cousin.
I don't think they have a 300+ range option, do they?
Neither do Volvo.

The longest range Smart is 280, EX30 is 298.

298 is close enough for me. Our expected use needs an EV to be able to do 250 without a charge, so every little helps.

Realistically I think we're probably going to need something that's comfortably 300+ to give us the headroom in winter.

There are some great deals on the Cupra Born at the moment, that’s what I’ve ended up ordering. Was going to get a Polestar but it ended up being £150/m more than the 77kWh Born.

The Born has a 340 mile WLTP which is enough for me.

I hate the size of the wheels on the Born. They look too big, and they can't help the ride.

Just spec DCC on it. I had an ID3 for a few weeks that had 19s and DCC and it was great, far better than my Polestar 2 is on its silly 20” wheels.

Well we've taken a punt and ordered one, long range single motor and one that's available in March - spoke to Volvo to ensure that we'd have a change to drive prior to then and can cancel if not for us - ticks a lot of boxes on paper (or should that be screen) and now I'm not going to be commuting by car could fit in well...

Did have to contact Volvo though to confirm the seat controls weren't buried in the screen as we do tweak those as we drive any distance - and they're not smile

The V1 has 18’s? I was pleasantly surprised with the ride on the 19’s though, certainly rode much better than a Polestar on 19’s.

If you're happy with the Tesla ethos of everything on the touch screen they're probably ok, but coming from anything vaguely traditional ergonomically is going to be a hard transition.

The windscreen demist does have a physical button but it's on the roof!

Windows are physical switches but in the middle (with a toggle for front/rear).

Surely the Volvo was never going to give you that, it’s real world range on the motorway in the winter is 160 miles and in the summer 205 miles.

160 miles is based on a temperature of -10C, not an everyday occurrence in the UK.

I’ve found their estimate of range spot on for my wife’s EV.

The requirement stated was for 250 miles - the best case above is 205 miles with no a/c used, so I don’t think my comment was irrelevant.

I would wager that this Volvo will not get anywhere near 250 miles, particularly on a motorway, at any point in the year.

Even if it did it wouldn't be comfortable.

Their estimates are normally based on crowd-sourced data, and given no-one has one yet…

That being said, I have a Polestar with a 64kWh battery, and 200 motorway miles at winter temps is just about doable. I doubt 250 motorway miles is possible regardless of the temperature.

I watched the AutoCar YouTube review and it was generally pretty positive, but Matty Prior seemed to take massive exception to the infotainment system. For me there were a few things that looked, well irritating at worst, but not necessarily deal breakers without actually experiencing the car myself. I quite often wonder whether a journalist gets a car for a limited time and wants to change settings on the move, something you’d never do in real usage. How often do you mess around with drive settings on the move? I don’t ever remember having to adjust the wing mirrors on any of the cars I’ve had with mirrors that dip in reverse.

That’s not to say I don’t think there are obvious compromises that have resulted in moving everything to the screen. You shouldn’t have to delve into a menu to change the temperature or turn the heated seats/wheel on or off.

As I suspected, I think we're going to end up with a Tesla at this rate.

If you've actually read it then it really doesn't. Other than the lack of buttons the review is very positive, and Tesla have been doing that for years yet still get 4+ star reviews in the same publication.
