What Audi need to be congratulated for is their sheer level of professionalism, and dedication to their sport. If you want to compete and win, you have to be fully committed. That means on all levels.
Even yesterday, there was a whole page advertising their Le Mans success in the Telegraph. It maybe unfair, but Ford's WRC effort is amateur by comparison, and the results bare testimony to this.
I applaud the VW Group for staying away from F1, and hope they never go there. It offers nothing for them.

Le Mans is first and foremost an endurance race.
Marketing and PR activities should be ancillary to that.
My preference would be for Audi PR to tone it down a bit, and remember that there is more to Le Mans than their recent dominance. They are there because their race team has performed exceptionally, which has given Audi PR a rare chance to take advantage of the high probability of an Audi victory - you wouldn't pour that much effort into an event at which success was, at best, 50:50, would you ?
Happy for the race team to carry on as they are now - frankly, if others can't compete then that's their issue... - but I would prefer to see a more balanced approach to their PR activities.
All it does, frankly, is waste not only their money but those of other manufacturers because they end up having to compete both on and off the track. I'd rather see Aston and Toyota spend their money on motor racing than being made to look like poor cousins because they don't hand out iPod touches for 'guests' to use.

A number of you seem to think that Porsche will take on Audi in LMP1. I don't see that happening, as the two company are link. Unless Audi leave LMP1, in which case, like Bently, there car will be base on the Audi's. Would you like that more? Most likely they will build a GTE and run a works team. I would look at Jaguar more than Porsche.
It will happen - during the Radio Le Mans Commentary it was advised that Porsche are returning to Le Mans on the basis that Audi are there ie they want that level of competition so if they win it wont be a hollow victory..predding said:

Exactly, VAG and Porsche have been saying this all along and people seem to ignore them. Can't wait! There is also a good chance there will be a Ferrari powered P1 car so Audi vs Toyota vs Porsche vs Ferrari vs Honda vs any other F1 engine you fancy... and this guy thinks that Le Mans has been ruined?? cjb1 said:
WTF!! That's the most arrogant, egotistical and conceited post I've ever read on PH!!! Quote "I know I am right as my other mates feel exactly the same".......and ......"Utter, utter crap, not what a sports car should sound like"....so your mates are obviously as up their own ass as you are then. Not saying you're wrong but jeezo, it's how you put it across!!
As is often typical with PH, you haven't read the post properly. Had you done so, you would have noticed the ' ' at the end of the relevant sentence. You obviously can't have read many PH posts either if you thought mine was the 'most arrogant, etc'. - notice it this time?julianc said:
Yes, Audi has ruined LM.
A dozen of us used to go every year until around 2007, since when we decided never to go again because:
- the Audi corporate machine and Audi-led rebuild of the village ruined the atmosphere. It used to be fan-led prior to the Audi corporate machine getting involved.
- I don't care whether diesels/hybrids complete more laps than petrol cars over the 24 hours, the diesels (and now hybrids as well) just do not sound like sports cars. Standing at the corners just prior to the Dunlop bridge, the petrol cars (big block V8s, Italian V12s, etc) are as loud as hell, just like a sports car should sound like. Then the Audi diesel arrives, as quiet as a sewing machine. Utter, utter crap, not what a sports car should sound like.
LM can only be improved by banning the diesels and hybrids. Discuss.
All IMHO, of course, but I know I am right as my other mates feel exactly the same.

With regard to my 'sound' comment, do you really think that a sports car should sound like a sewing machine? Interesting, I have never met a single person who thinks that (note: who I have met). Why do you think everyone on Top Gear talks about the sound of a sports car or supercar as well as its looks and performance? The sound is part of the experience of a sport car. Many a time I have been in the tent in the early hours of the LM race identifying the cars going past by their sound, and not being able to do that because you can't hear the car is not what it's all about to me.
So before you start throwing insults around, try reading the post properly first.
Tosser.
Apologies for existing .......I am not worthy..........st, the last time I got a talking to like that I was at school!

I have to admit that LM has many, many fantastic memories for me after 10 years in a row camping next to the track. I could spend hours talking about the things we used to get up to. Probably makes me a little sensitive now we don't go any more......
glad you liked it, gotta have a bit of humour on here, it does sometimes get a bit personal and pointed! I'm very envious of you going ten times I'd love to go to Le Mans as I've followed it on TV ever since I was a lad, my ideal holiday would be to drive the old 911 down there with my tent and witness it first hand unfortunately Mrs B has other ideas of what her perfect holiday should be so we do neither LOL!

The American dictum is "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday". Jaguar went racing in the fifties to increase brand awareness, and it worked, and it's likewise for Audi, who, if we include the Audi-by-another-name, Bentley, have won it 12 out of 13 times anyway. It takes another manufacturer to step up to the mark and knock them off their throne. Racing is a part of road car developement, like the new flywheel hybrid system that Audi say they will employ in their road cars. It's where carbon and ceramic brakes came form for example. No, I don't begrudge Audi their wins, since it is their money that has developed the cars. Ferrari were dominant for years in F1 when their budget was $750 million to Jaguar's £150 million, and it was no wonder that the Jaguar team were nowhere in sight.
But what if Audi pull out and take all their money away? The ACO is heavily sponsored by Audi (just look at the pace cars and all the directors' cars for example). Perhaps we could go the American way and reduce the specification of cars and the costs involved, but that would stifle developement.

For me there are two sides to this - commercial and entertainment
Commercially LM needs to turn a profit and Audi pulling out would make that very difficult, if they did then I believe LM would suffer greatly and might even end.
Entertainment wise LM needs to be interesting or people will lose interest, they need to make it a competition or it will just be well boring.
Balancing the two can't be easy

Well the 2014 rules are intended to curb the costs slightly especially with the inclusion of F1 spec customer engines. But what if Audi pull out and take all their money away? I love the fact that engine design is essentially free to do what you want!
