Viper versus 911 at Le Mans

Entry list for 2013 Le Mans confirms an enticing head-to-head for all-new Viper and 991-based RSR. Game on!

The entry list for Le Mans 2013 has got us all whipped up with excitement for this year's race, not least because of the exciting battle promised in the LM GTE field. The head-to-head at the front of LMP1 with Audi's diesels doing battle with Toyota's hybrids will be fascinating of course.

Return of the RSR first step to new Porsche era
Return of the RSR first step to new Porsche era
But it's the return of a factory Porsche team with an all-new 991-based 911 RSR that'll have Le Mans fans really excited. Even more so with the news that the Germans can't expect to have things their own way. Yup, the Vipers are returning to La Sarthe for the first time in 10 years and promising to give the Porsche team a run for their money. Also in the fight will be two Ferrari 458s (one with Giancarlo Fisichella on board), a couple of Corvettes and two Aston Martins too. For fans of 'real' cars, proper exhaust notes and iconic Le Mans brands LM GTE is a thrilling prospect, the GTE Am category fleshing out the GT field further of course.

Ahead of them a field of 22 LMP2 cars will be chasing down the big boys while the '56th pit' previously occupied by the Deltawing will this year be filled by the fuel-cell GreenGT H2. You can download the full entry list here.

If all this has whetted your appetite for heading to Le Mans this year then get in touch with 1st Tickets and arrange your camping through PistonHeads. Our private campsite is now full (thanks to all who have booked to stay with us) but we still have availability across Le Mans including some pitches on our standard camping area in Bleu Nord. shame we couldn't have a C7 Corvette too, but will still be a great race with this an added element. The 458 is still a hell of a weapon as is the Aston becoming one, so this is not a 2 horse race at all. They'll all be quick (the Viper hopefully suiting the circuit well) so keeping out of trouble will be key.

I'm more interested in the punch up between the Corvette and the Viper. Although the Aston came close, nothing beats the sound thunder of a corvette at full chat.
GT Pro/AM is compelling this year. A works Porsche team, 458's, AM's etc. Lining up to be vintage year at the back of the grid. Can't wait!

LMP1 should be a cracker too.
Toyota running two cars on the back of a strong finish to the season in the WEC.
Should be a great tussle with Audi - just what Le Mans needs.

Can't wait

Vette vs Viper!

No one cares about the Beetle as it will look just like all of the other ones from the last 40 years.

P.S. a couple of pictures from the 2012 Mid-Ohio ALMS race which was the debut of the new Viper.

There I was, watching last night's TG and lamenting how Vipers weren't at Le Mans any more and today I read this! Great news, always good to see a bit of variety at Le Mans.

Oh, I see what you've done there... tried to make a funny about Porsches looking like Beetles. Let me reply my American cousin.... with something equally informed and cliched... like who would be interested in pieces of pathetic American tat that can't go around corners and are made of pig iron and tin

now then now then, vetteheadracer is a keen sportscar follower from what I have seen over the years so I am sure his comments are tongue in cheek. We all know what a solid item the 911 is and has always been and we would all lament its passing from sportscar racing I am sure. We also know what a stirling job Corvette have done over the years with its racing programme and if the new Viper can be half as succesful and omnipresent as the last racing one then it will have done well.

I would imagine the Vipers will struggle a bit at their first LeMans, they dont seem to have been that quick in their US outings so far.

I predict the race will be between Ferrari, Corvette, Aston and maybe the new Porsche.

But, the Vipers look amazing and are an asset to the grid regardless.

I think La Sarthe will suit the Vipers better than some of the ALMS tracks they raced on and they will have a full season's worth of racing and a lot of closed season testing (I assume) by then. They'll probably go a lot better than recent 'curiosity' entries such as the Morgan, TVR, Evora et al - although I'd be amazed if they did a Panoz!

IIRC, when Racecar Engineering interviewed them about their GT ambitions they were aiming to develop the car this year ready for 2014 to try taking wins etc - it's still under development for now. (i.e. more than your usual cars are, I realise they're all constantly being developed)

You guys realise that the GTE engines are all ludicrously restricted, right? They had to downsize the Viper engine to get it to run right on the tiny restrictor, it's there to try and enforce parity across the cars.

The holy Mezger 911's are about the same power, but obviously have a much higher state of tune than the big Viper lump.

Nicely unstressed.
Edited for accuracy.

That is true it'll be unstressed given the max stresses on an engine are at the highest engine speeds, but that's a hell of a weight to be carrying around.

Are there any Lotuses entered? The Evora GTE and Exige R looked LM-ready.

Evoras raced a few years, didn't go very well.
