Apologies if this has already been covered but I spotted this on Club Arnage and felt that PHers should be warned.

Although it's a few months away yet, just a reminder to those planning to travel via Rouen that there will be serious diversions in place. One of the main bridges is out of action as they are having to completely remove and rebuild one of the spans - taking an estimated 55 weeks.

See this for the reasons why:

From the shade of the tarmac, I'd say that's Pont Mathilde.

It is Pont Mathilde, so Rouen, which is often a nightmare, will be a complete no go area

What's interesting is that currently if you try and plot a route on Google Maps it avoids that bridge.

Not a problem just follow the road this side of the river (D6015 then D7) instead of past the railway sidings other side of river (D18 E). Then join autoroute at Jct 21 instead of 22. Might be busy at peak times though. Hopefully they'll have it reopened before then if posts above are correct.

We used this road on the way back last year. It's mainly single carriageway rather than the tight dual carriageway that goes past the railway sidings. The main problem will be traffic volume so coming through at night is best option if possible.

Well thats something to look out for as we've got a Tuesday night booked in the Mercure hotel overlooking the bridge. Should be ok though as we arrive evening time and will be on the road after a pot of coffee and some pastry. It'll make a nice change to see something else of Rouen apart from the railway sidings.

I completely avoid the Rouen area...
From Calais come off the A28 and head West on the A29 to Yvetot. From there head South over the river bridge (the first one to the West of Rouen) to Bourg Achard where you can either rejoin the A28 or go across country. Adds on a little bit to the journey but is a more pleasant and traffic free route than the slog through Rouen wink

Wow, Rouen area has been always like that. Even years ago, when I lived there, there was constant diversions and problems with the southern roads...

There is a diversion signed in both directions taking you north to Dieppe and then across to the autoroute.
The route staying on the east side of the river is very, very busy. It's a bottleneck to turn left to start as there are two sets of lights to get through, then its steady but through a built up area down to the commercial centre and onto the autoroute.
I've been through Rouen 5 times since last October and its taken around 20 mins longer.
Unless you know where you are going take the diversions its further but less stressful.
Going again next week and end of March it really is a major work and best avoided.

I had this delight just two weeks ago. The sat nav started taking us from Normandy to Dieppe instead of Calais (don't ask)so we found ourselves in Rouen wondering what had happened to the Pont de Normandie. Don't worry says I, this is our Le Mans route, no problems. This roundabout will have a concrete cow on it, and thats the garage where we always stop for a leak etc etc. The got to the usual turn off up toward the tunnel and..............big concrete barriers. Had to go over bridge in centre of town. Really bad and do not want that with Le Mans traffic. Must re route. (No concrete cows this year).

Surely one of the Le Mans road trip highlights is getting lost in Rouen and seeing a new part of it every year. This justs adds to the fun

Is Paris a feasible alternative for those leaving straight after the race, the Perifereque (sp?) must be fairly quiet on a Sunday evening?
