I've got an overnight stop in Le Mans as part of a road trip in May. I'll have the OH with me, who will insist on staying somewhere nice. Could anyone recommend me a hotel please?

The Mercure in the centre of town is well enough appointed.

Won't cut the mustard, sadly. Thinking more of a chateau...

And here's another one about 45 minutes NE of Le Mans at a super little market town called Mortagne au Perche. www.hotel-tribunal.fr We've stayed at this upmarket Logis every year for about 10 years on our annual pilgrimage to the Sarthe and it keeps on getting better. Excellent restaurant. Have a look on trip advisor for reviews.

I can highly recommend The Hotel de France at la Chartre sur Loir 40km south of Le Mans. With good access to the AutoRoute. The hotel has a great history with the Lemans Race and has just undergone a complete refurbishment in early 2014, after a new British owner has taken over. The Rooms are great with every luxury and the food will not disappoint. censored

Here at Le Mans we are not overblessed with good hotels, most being maximum 3* rating. The Mercure is the best but doesn't suit, and if you are heading south I'd look around the Loire. My personal favourite is the 4* Hotel Prieuré at Chenehutte, near Saumur. Fantastic food and choice of a chalet in the gardens or rooms in the hotel, plus sitting high a good aspect. It isn't Le Mans though, and if you want Le Mans then we don't really have any chateau accommodation. The Hotel de france has been mentioned but it is a Logis de France, not a high class stopover, although it has been given a complete makeover last January.

Thanks all. I've sent an enquiry to the Hotel de France, so waiting to hear back.

The next stop from Le Mans will be Saumur, so didn't make sense to stay too near there.

Turns out the night I'm passing through is MotoGP weekend, so everything's booked up. Bugger.

Hmm, there'll be about 80,000 here for that and Le Mans doesn't have a surfeit of hotels in the first place. You'll find that most hotels for a 25 mile radius will be booked solid, but I can only suggest you ring the Le Mans tourist office (they speak English) if you are set on staying around here. However as a resident I would strongly advise you to carry on for a couple of hours to the Prieuré and have a wonderful time. You could spend the next day sightseeing along the Loire.

Yes, once the kind lady at the Hotel de France mentioned the MotoGP it became clear why I was struggling to find availability, and why the Mercure were advertising a room at £838 per night!

Our next stop is Saumur, so I think we'll have a wander round Le Mans in the day and then head off there a day early.
