We used this route...

Quite quick, but ultimately I look at Google Maps as approaching Rouen and decide then.

As suggested, I took the Yvetot route both ways (Friday lunchtime, Sunday afternoon). Piece of cake - though horsebox we creamed past pre-Rouen on way home was there for the taking again when we rejoined the main route back to Calais afterwards.... It's longer, but I think more reliable. Roads more interesting and I think more places to stop for lunch/fuel. One lane on bridge was closed but really no traffic at all. Saw no Brits. Would do again, particularly on the way down when it's always worse.
Son I went to the Classic on Friday, returned Monday. On the Friday we used the Yvetot route lunch time to avoid Rouen, no problems. On the return journey we decided to go through Rouen mid morning, was absolutely fine. However, the traffic travelling south past the railway yards etc was solidly blocked.
