This year will be my first at Le Mans and I'm catching the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Caen on the Wednesday evening. We arrive in Caen around 7am and the plan is to make a leisurely journey to Le Mans via the back roads.

Our route is still undecided - does anyone have a recommendation of somewhere we could stop for breakfast on the way to Le Mans. Either the name of a town/village or specific eatery?

Darlo, I will be interested to hear of any responses to your post....I'm on the same ferry as you with a group of friends having used the Tunnel last year - see you at the port on Wednesday eve unless we can organise to meet on the way down (we are coming from south Staffs)? smile

A number of the Beermountain lot do this.

I'd second the Pegasus Bridge stop but also Arromanches is worth a stop. These are quite tourist friendly with hotels and cafés a plenty. We did a full tour from Point du Hoc and back towards Caen with plenty of stops enroute. The last time we went via Caen we stopped at Mont St Michel and had breakfast there.

For a bit of 'authentic' Normandy, head South down the A84 from Caen and peel off into the town of Villedieu, main street lined with cafes and eateries and really feels as if you've arrived in France. If you're self catering, a monster Casino and small but uber cheap Lidl supermarkets on the way in are far cheaper than anything close to LM. Easy drive down from there.

My folk live just outside the town, we arrive there in time for lunch from Le Havre and are usually well set up on the camp site by 6pm ish with no fuss.

Thanks all. Pegasus Bridge is a must, will definitely stop for a look around. And then head down to one of the places mentioned - thanks again for the tips.

MrC, see you on the ferry... I'm travelling from Cheltenham, but have a couple of mates joining me from Yorkshire / Leicestershire so will wait for them before heading to Portsmouth.

Looking forward to it.

I have vivid recollections of stopping at a little cafe in the square at Falaise on the early morning run down from Caen many years ago - the locals were having cognac with their coffee at 7.30am. Madame had to go next door for croissants when we all ordered - very French.
