What's the deal with glass bottles then?
for the last 2 years (first year in Bleu Nord second in BJ) we have stopped off at supermarket and purchased an obscene about of beer in glass bottles. And never been searched more than a "open boot....OK"
What's the worse case scenario?
I don't want to be beerless and down about £200 due to confiscated beer at the very start of the weekend.

Has anyone on here ever had glass bottles taken off them?
I had to remove some from a backpack before being let in the actual circuit once. They where in netting, so were visable. I necked them and carried out. The six more I had hidden inside the bag went un-noticed.I was stopped and asked to remove the half dozen beers at the entrance last year.
Walked to the next entrance and went in without a problem.
Last couple of years they have been stopping mini moto's from racing around
the Houx camp. Not seen to much in the way of bottles taken though. Some
campers were camped just inside the gate with a transit half full of beers
last year.
Keep it sensible and there is normally no problem.

From what I can remember the glass bottle thing came about a few years back when after a lot of fighting / trouble at the motorbike race the local council / mayor decided the weekend before the Le Mans 24 hours week that all bottles should be banned from the circuit. Meaning that people turning up early on the Monday to Wednesday were getting all their booze in bottles taken off them at the gate. Some campsites were worse than others as the security people interpreted the rule in different ways, some banning it from the track area and some also banning it from the campsites. Anyway by Wednesday afternoon / Thursday the owners of the local supermarkets found out / realised no one was buying any of the millions of Kronenbourgs etc that they'd filled their warehouses with and forced the council / mayor to change the rule.
Now you'll sometimes be asked at the gate when entering the circuit perimeter while drinking out of a bottle to finish it and put it in the bin, but they won't check your bag so then you just open another one when you want. One thing they've obviously always been very strict on is DONT TAKE AN OPEN BEER BOTTLE INTO PIT LANE OR ATTEMPT TO OPEN ONE IN THERE.
Remember though, this is France so as with the 1st ban it could happen at anytime so try to limit yourself to as much alcohol you can physically down at the gate in one or hide it very well just incase.
P.S. if you read the weekend ticket, the small print usually says something along the lines that if you are found with a glass bottle, the police will consider it an offensive weapon and you may be charged with attempted manslaughter or something along those lines but we've interpreted as meaning if you smash it and threaten some one with it but who knows??? This is The French Police we're talking about!

These rules aren't really any different to you'd see at a similar event in the UK. Probably LESS restrictive actually - I'd expect to see an outright ban on bring alcohol in in the UK, so you HAVE to buy whatever crap larger they got a deal on at £7 a pint.
The ACO can do their rules with 10 images and 3 paragraphs of plain English/French.
For the Silverstone GP it's over 25 points of Terms and Conditions using easy to understand language like:
"8. SCL reserves the right to refuse admission and to remove persons from the Venue who do not comply with the Venue rules or these terms and conditions, who represents a security risk, nuisance or annoyance to the staging of the Event or who have in his or her possession prohibited items, which shall include but not be limited to alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, chemicals of any kind, glass bottles, barbeques, ladders, laser pens, weapons or any offensive materials in whatever format. SCL further reserves the right to conduct security searches of persons and their belongings to ensure the safety of persons at the Event. Pass-outs and re-admissions to the Venue shall be granted at SCL’s discretion. Re-admission shall only be possible if a valid official pass-out is presented."
So that's a ban on acoholic drinks in glass bottles (or otherwise).

Santa Pod are really strict on the glass rule. There used to be mountains of booze piled up at the main gate that had been confiscated when the Beetle events were on. We used to sneak in Vodka, JD, etc then mix it in a plastic mixer bottle for walking around with. I don't blame any of the events for banning glass but if you keep the empties with you and bin / take them home it's no big deal.
The main reason we do bottles at Le Mans is for the yearly sculpture. I feel it brings a bit of sophistication to the proceedings

Everything's a gamble (like the chance of the student on a bike, who rides just slightly slower than you car can crawl having the foggiest idea where the camping pitch they are meant to be showing you to is) but I'd think you'd be OK with those - especially if they're tucked right at the bottom of the boot under everything else...
Most of these rules are actually in place for the bike race when the real crazies come to town. People who wouldn't think twice of throwing one of the full-sized canisters on a bonfire.
