Arnage, the main street.
There seem a lot of touristy places up near the old part of Le Mans City near the Cathederal as well.

Or drive south 40 mins to Le Chartre sur Loir, Hotel de France. Lovely .

Arnage is generally shut for hols this weekend, so it is very difficult. In Le Mans Sunday lunch is the big event and many restaurants close in the evening.

I will be with LoT on Sunday and am planning on DIY.

I'd probably not recommend Arnage outside of race weeks. It's a completely different place! I would be going to Le Mans town. The Motorsport Cafe is fun for basic food such as pizza/burgers and sports excellent variety of memorabilia all over the walls. Otherwise there are several good restaurants whose names escape me around the square with the Cathedral.

If you are looking for something special, then I think that this is the restaurant that Lowdrag recommends.

It is open on Saturday and Sunday lunch, but not the evening. Phone to make a reservation as it could still be conges.

Went to Arnage during the classic on the Saturday morning with my son. Got served 2 pathetic ham & cheese toasties & a very luke warm coffee for 13 Euros. Total rip off. Better off going to the supermarket & buying a baguette & brie!!

This applies anywhere, you can't compare sitting down for food in a restaurant with picnicing which is what you propose. And I agree, you can really often come out way better off doing it your way.
As noted earlier, most French restaurants close after Sunday Midday Lunch and often dont open again til the Tues. It's their weekend I suppose.

Not really the point I was trying to make, I expect to pay a lot more in a restaurant but I also expect a reasonable standard of food. My proposal of a picnic in this case would have been superior on both counts!!

Why not pm Lowdrag if he's not replied?

As a local he's likely to know if anywhere good is open Sunday night and is more than helpful to PH types in need.

Ask the Le Mans tourist board. Google is your friend. That's what they are there for.

Friday or Saturday morning at the SuperU Arnage is always good for a fresh omelette before shopping, and the toilet is pretty clean.
