Isn't the superbowl the most brilliant place to launch an LMP?
The traditional "50 car geeks at a factory" won't bring nearly as many potential new fans and customers to L M. Exposure like this can only be a good thing - if more people know and care about the worlds greatest race, more manufacturers will have to be there. Do you think SRT would have lost their funding for the vipers if 40m americans were watching?
Indeed, I think it absolutely fits in with their current ethos and the way they are approaching now and have approached in the recent past their racing (although I'm not to sure of the '30 years of maverick' byline). The traditional "50 car geeks at a factory" won't bring nearly as many potential new fans and customers to L M. Of course, they'll get lambasted for making Le Mans too popular and not like the old days from some quarters, but fair play to them. I also like that they've not made outrageous claims about the car (apart from Andy Palmer's cringey speech at the launch), they've just let the internet get on with it and gained all the free advertising.
exactly how they going to launch it then? A roll out on the pitch at half time (if they have half time that is) would be a big turn off of for those there who no doubt will be lining up for Buds and dogs anyway and the tv networks will be showing commercials. I really cannot see it being an tv advert at such a prime spot.... Think Hyundai/Flaming Lips, what do they have in mind?
The live entertainment package at the Superbowl is massive, the TV advertising is also massive. No doubt they'll be wanting to do something different, if not to the normal Superbowl 'stuff' then certainly to the rather staid car launches normally seen. If nothing else, it'll be interesting.
Yes. To put the scale of the event into context, recent acts for the 'half time entertainment' include Madonna, Whitney Houston (the wardrobe malfunction debacle), the Rolling Stones and last year, to a reported audience of 115 million, Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
It has such a standing that the NFL are asking the acts to pay to perform, not the other way around, due to the surge in interest post performance.
It's big. Very big.
But, as the Forbes link above says, this is a Nissan ad, not just a Nissan LMP1 ad, so it's not going to be 60 seconds of LMP1/Le Mans, but it'll probably be part of it.

At the risk of missing the point - was that not Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. Edited by Red Firecracker on Sunday 11th January 07:46
I echo the above comments about how well they have kept it under wraps

Looks interesting. Front wheels larger than rear? Very plain bodywork.

Well, it certainly looks bizarre!
Normally, i work on the principle of "if it looks right, it's probably right" - certinly ugly f1 cars are often dogs. On this princile, that Nissan isn't going to take home the silver...
I really hope this ends up being one of those times that i'm totally wrong, and the Nissan is competitive - a design that unconventional deserves to do well just for having the balls to try.
Strange that it's on a website as non geeky as jalopnik (rather than dsc or similar) - but it pretty much shows that the chap on Muksanne Corner knows his onions...

Arrgggghhhhhhh !!!!!
Just a wee bit dissapointed to be honest, it does look more like an experiment, a la Deltawing, rather than a full on threat, like the new Porsche was last year. Just looks wrong in everyway, but lets hope they turn the dials up to 11, and let all that power loose. I was one of the doubting Toms regarding the Deltawing, and had to eat umble pie, as it was a jolly good attempt in the end.

A long way to go before judgements of the cars pace can be really assessed... We've only just got grainy pictures of it.
It is certainly interesting, reminding me of the panoz entries a bit. The proportions are completely different to what you expect from LMP and it must be one hell of a compact engine up front.
Fair play for going a different route. I hope any new entry has a decent turn of speed and it spices up the battle at Le mans.
