Le Mans 1988 - 2003 Silk Cut Cortina
Discussion
Does anyone remember the fans based in Garage Vert with the Cortina Estate painted in Silk Cut livery, which ultimately ended up over the years as a Jag XJ6 and Volvo 240 also fully loaded and looking like team cars (ahem) ?
The Cortina (Bertha) died and the XJ6 rolled during some of the many antics I (err) believe.
Any photos anyone?

I certainly remember them especially the cortina which we saw for many years, i saw a volvo in silk cut livery a couple of years ago in tonbridge but never saw it at le mans
Tonbridge? I thought it was scrapped. The theme came from a 'Silk Cut Spitfire' which in about 1988 was parked outside the cafe on the Mulsanne straight in full livery and no windscreen, and it sparked a tradition that lasted 15 years. missingbadly999 said:

Think they were in Houx in2002- 2004 and rolled that Jag on the dirt track inside campsite.Volvo appeared the next year. Everyone of them absolutely bladdered for the whole week/end.Their camp was unbelievable. The Cortina (Bertha) died and the XJ6 rolled during some of the many antics I (err) believe.

Yes I remember it. It was slalom-ing around the Camping Houx oil-drum rubbish bins last time I saw it. Hit most of them.
It was called 'binning' and the front bumper had a chrome Austin overrider fitted for the purpose. The XJ6 had furniture castors screwed to the roof the year after the Cortina rolled - just in case. The 'original' was a Silk Cut Spitfire circa 1989 - this was hand painted and the car didnt have a windscreen. Looked really great.
This idea was copied for the Mk2 Cortina Estate (Bertha), then a Volvo 240 Estate and then ultimately a Jag XJ6. These did over 25 car-years at Le Mans between them and I wonder if the Spitfire lads ever knew what they had unleashed.
I'll see if I can find some photos.
