Posted this on Club Arnage too, but thought I'd ask here............

Just wondered if anyone had plans for taking stills or video from a drone during the race weekend?
Obviously, there are dangers with drones being over the track, but to be track side of the fencing, but not over the track and getting vantage points from otherwise prohibited locations would be interesting.
Not condoning it, as I assume its against some French law, but hey, so is speeding ;0)

Nice idea but personally I wouldn't, there has been a security issues with them randomly appearing in Paris in the recent news, so I'd say a massive public event would kick off a huge security issue.

I would have thought a big no no.. There is always up to five helicopters flying round the circuit during the rac and practice/qualifying , would think they will have a laws just like UK, a drone flying at any height would be unacceptable and probably against the law, buy a long selfie stick

I'm not even considering it. Apart from the safety issues, I can't even play a computer game - there is no way I would even consider putting many hundreds of pounds worth of kit up in the air under my control!
Just wondered if anyone else would?

I put one up in an empty field near our site last year, but outside of any track activity and when things around the circuit were relatively quiet. I noticed a few go up during the race above Porsche Curves, bit stupid in my opinion given the speed of the cars and the number of individuals in the area

Keep it for the playing fields when you get back, not a world famous international motor sport event with 260,000 spectators and 3-4 helicopters flying around.

There's always one.......

Well, I for one say - Go for it...

Having seen how friendly Le Nationale Plod ( not the local Plod ) can be - with someone behaving like a bit of an arse.

You will not be asked to kindly bring your drone back to earth.
It will not be a request, discussion or negotiation.

They will jump on you - beat 7 shades of st out of you ( even if you capitulate) . - Manhandle you into a police van - and spend a night in a jail cell.

When you are released - you have a long walk home - and for some reason - your body will be sporting a hell of a lot more bruising than it did 24 hours earlier.

It won't be something you will look back on with fond memories.

But... don't let the above put you off.. we do need a laugh at someone's expense. So...why not yours?

Jeez, wind your neck in sunshine.
I made it quite clear I'm not considering it.
I'm grown up enough to see the potential for problems, should someone send a drone up. That's exactly why I won't be doing it.
Merely wondered if anyone had plans to?

I have no idea how reliable thee things are, but could you imagine if someone flew one of these things directly over the track and the oncoming cars........
1/ it may cause a driver to have a split lapse of concentration, which could result in a very serious incident!

2/ what if said Drones radio signals got somehow tampered with and the thing flew out of control hitting a car! or Helicopter? Then the st really would fly!

There is also the Airport very nearbuy!

Recipe for disaster in my book, but on the other hand the camera footage would be epic.

There were drones up over Blu last year, which I thought a tad silly being an airport just over the fence..

Yet you seem to be going to some effort to promote the idea when you state you are not remotely considering it. scratchchin

p.s. Did I misunderstand the implication of your "But hey, so is speeding wink " quip? hehe

Fatboy - that's where I'm coming from. It would be daft, but the footage would be great.

Rich - I asked a question. Yes, you have got the wrong end of the stick. Certainly not promoting anything.

I think it's best I leave it there as it seems difficult for people to understand that this was a question and not something I intend to do or encourage others to do.

A very bad idea.

I've built and fly regularly several different drones ranging from small 250mm span size to large 900mm size which holds a proper high def video camera underneath.

Anything that can lift a camera capable of recording video is going to be at least 1.5kg but more likely to be around 2.5kg. The blades range from nylon to carbon fibre and when spinning are more than capable of slicing through human flesh. They can travel 50mph+ quite easily. So as you can imagine that you really don't want that hitting you should the pilot lose control either through pilot error or technical fault.

Taking one up anywhere near crowds of people is just asking for trouble, let alone in space occupied by manned aircraft and fast moving cars.

Just my opinion on this from a regular drone pilot.
