I broke the clutch driven plate in my Midget two years ago, on the way past Lisieux heading to Dieppe

Called the AA in with my 5* insurance and the guy took me to his garage so he could check out fixing it

When I told him it was a hybrid clutch plate (Ford type 9 to BMC block) that had gone he called the AA, who had me put in a hotel overnight and picked up next day after breakfast

To Le Havre as foot passenger and Pompey to get the hire car they'd arranged from the chap who stayed behind to welcome me

Then a few days later the Midget was delivered home on a big eight car transporter

I will be taking out the AA insurance again this year after such good service

My fall back position would be use the rental car to return wife and dog to UK. Return to France and come back as a foot passenger. Bit of a faff though.
I'm pretty sure it isn't allowed to take the rental car across the channel from what the RAC said to me, hence why they say you cross as a foot passenger. When I said about the dog I was told by the person I was speaking to that there was a company who took them, but they only crossed a couple of times each day but he didn't know more. It is only since I got back that I checked and found out it is DFDS on Newhaven-Dieppe route. Seems there isn't a good solution in that case, but I was lucky in that the car was sort of drivable and did get us on and off the boat - big sigh of relief once I was out of the port area in Dover.
I always travel by eurostar. I think our dog would get very distressed stuck in a kennel on a ferry or left in a car.
If it ever came to it I'd either.

a) Beg and plead with a PHer
b) http://www.easypetuk.com/Owner%20Accompanied.html
c) Leave wife and dog in hotel, return to UK for spare car.
d) I think some car hire companies allow cross channel travel.

Any option would be a complete mare.

For those taking older cars check the small print as many companies won't cover car of 15 years or older.

I have RAC cover through Barclays. I phoned them before a previous Le Mans trip to check, and their answer was that anything over 10 years old would incur a surcharge (around £60 IIRC) if I needed to use their service.

EDIT - £100 supplement, just phoned to check.
