Route - Rouen vs Yvetot - The which is quicker challenge
Discussion
In many threads including this one there has been much discussion about which route to take with many of us having taken the Pont de Brotonne crossing in recent years to avoid Rouen with the bridge being down. That said, I also know several of my group have just gone via Rouen and to hell with it and not experienced any traffic issues despite the bridge closure. But then, I remember coming home in 2005 and it taking over 2 hours to get past the train yards so one never knows.
But which is quicker? We are travelling out on Tuesday 9th so no particular traffic issues are expected so hopefully we can get a reasonably accurate answer. I shall go via Yvetot and my esteemed colleague Pablo (PHer Slartibartfast) will go the traditional route. The finish line will be the car park just after the peage at the beginning of the A28. Personally, if there only ends up being mere minutes in it then I will probably stick with the Yvetot route as it's considerably prettier with that epic crossing at the Pont de Brotonne.
The only rule is that neither car may exceed the speed limit of the given route they travel.
I will report back on this thread as to the winner and the time difference as soon as we've passed by so about lunchtime on Tuesday.

It probably depends on the time of day - Rouen can be reasonably quick a lot of the time, particularly now the bridge is repaired. However, in rush hour times the train yard section can be very, very slow.
The results will be interesting but I don't think we are in a particular hurry so will probably take the scenic route.

I did that route at the weekend on way to the Testing Day. It made a nice diversion after miles of Autoroute and bypasses any possible hold ups in Rouen. ViaM state the differences is about 15min longer via Yvetot in absolute time, but going over the Seine via a different bridge was a nice change.

I'm with you Andy. We'll be passing through about 1130 I think so not expecting traffic so hopefully a reasonably free flow on both routes to get a time difference. The results will be interesting but I don't think we are in a particular hurry so will probably take the scenic route.

Last time i was down that way (not a race weekend) we came back via Yvetot, its a nice diversion and we ended up re-overtaking the same cars once we rejoined the autoroute north of Rouen.
There's not a lot in it time-wise, but it's nice to get in some A roads for at least part of the journey and as CJA above said, no sitting in queues through that marshalling yard in Rouen!

Last time I went through Rouen (admittedly a few years back), I stuck on the N338 all the way through and barely stopped.
Basically, as you cross the toasted bridge, instead of turning off and doing the train yard route, you go straight on and follow the road until it joins the A13. There's one bit of traffic lights, but then it's underpasses and dual carriagway.
Worth a look if you're not going through in the rush hour.
That said, we're doing Yvetot and having lunch somewhere on that stretch of road.
Just arrived at the top of the A28 south of Rouen.
The result is in. 13 minutes was the time difference in favour of Rouen but to be fair, there were a few slow points stuck behind trucks via Yvetot but my mind is made up. Yvetot much prettier, sod all in it time wise really so that's me every year.
Safe journey everyone!

Funnily enough (and with these threads completely unknown), we've decided for a change this year and are going to investigate going via Yvetot as well :-)
It's been a while since I've been, but from memory the Rouen route is just too variable - if you take the wrong turning from the bridge you get stuck the wrong side of the tracks forever or even if you make if over the bridge correctly you can get lost in the many side streets of the Quevily's...
Has any ever tried turning right before the bridge & not crossing the river until much later on/lower down near Oissel/Elbeuf, or even tried the rickety looking ferry at La Bouille at the bottom of the loop in the river?
